Thickness is the whole calculation
Everything about a stucco estimate follows from one multiplication: net area times thickness. A traditional three coat system over metal lath is 3/8 for the scratch coat, 3/8 for the brown coat and about 1/8 for the finish, which totals 7/8 of an inch. Over masonry, where there is no lath to embed, two coats at 3/8 and 1/8 gets you to a half inch. One coat systems, which are proprietary fibre-reinforced products, go on at around 3/8 plus a finish.
Turn that into volume and the scale becomes obvious. Eight hundred square feet of net wall at 7/8 of an inch is 58 cubic feet before waste, which is more than two cubic yards. Bagged base coat at roughly 0.8 cubic feet a bag is somewhere near 80 bags, six thousand pounds of material, all of it mixed in batches and carried to the wall. This is why stucco is priced by the square foot by people who do it every day and why the material cost is the smaller half of the number.
Bag coverage is printed as square feet, and that is a trap
Base coat bags almost always state coverage as square feet at 3/8 of an inch. That is convenient if you are doing a 3/8 coat and misleading if you are doing anything else, because coverage is inversely proportional to thickness. A bag that covers 25 square feet at 3/8 covers 12.5 at 3/4 and 75 at 1/8. The conversion is worth knowing: square feet at 3/8 divided by 32 gives you cubic feet, because 3/8 of an inch is one thirty-second of a foot.
The yield field in this calculator defaults to 0.80 cubic feet a bag, which sits in the middle of what common 80 pound base coat products state, but products genuinely differ and fibre-reinforced one coat mixes differ more. Read the bag you are buying, do the division, and put the real number in. If the count is tight, that one input moves the answer more than the waste allowance does.
Waste in stucco is not like waste in concrete
Concrete waste is mostly about the shape of the hole. Stucco waste is about material that never reaches the wall. Rebound off the lath during the scratch coat is real and visible, there is always a skin left in the mixer and on the hawk, and the substrate is never as flat as the drawing, which means the brown coat is thicker in some places to make it flat. Fifteen percent is a reasonable working allowance for someone competent. A first-timer throwing a scratch coat onto lath will lose more than that on the floor and should carry twenty five.

What sits behind the stucco matters more than the stucco
Over a framed wall, stucco is a reservoir cladding on a drainage plane. Water gets into it, and the paper behind the lath and the weep screed at the bottom are what let that water back out at the base of the wall rather than into the sheathing. Two layers of weather-resistive paper is standard practice over sheathing precisely because the first layer bonds to the stucco and the second stays as the drainage plane. Getting the lap direction right, shingle-fashion, is not a detail you can fix afterwards.
Over solid masonry it is a different animal. There is no lath, no paper and no drainage cavity, and the stucco bonds directly to a clean, unpainted, absorbent surface. Dampening the wall before the base coat goes on stops the block sucking the water out of the mix. Stucco over painted or sealed masonry will not bond and will come off in sheets, which is the most common reason a render job fails on an older building.
Cracking, and the honest limits of a quantity page
Every stucco wall cracks somewhere. What separates hairline crazing from a structural-looking split is control joint placement, the timing between coats, and how well the substrate was braced. Coats need to cure rather than dry, which means keeping them damp in hot weather, and the brown coat wants to be as flat as you can float it because the finish coat is only an eighth of an inch and cannot fix a wavy wall.
None of that comes out of a volume calculation, and this page does not attempt it. Questions people ask
How many bags of stucco per square foot?
At 3/8 of an inch, one 80 lb bag of base coat covers roughly 25 square feet, so about one bag per 25 square feet per coat. A full three coat system has two base coats totalling 3/4 of an inch, so it is closer to one bag per 12 to 13 square feet of wall before waste. The reason the calculator asks for the bag yield rather than assuming it is that products vary by a meaningful margin and the figure is printed on the bag in a form you can convert: square feet at 3/8 divided by 32 gives cubic feet.
Can I skip the scratch coat and put the brown coat straight onto lath?
No, and the two coats do different jobs. The scratch coat is pushed hard into the lath so it keys through and grips the metal, then it is scratched horizontally to give the next coat something to bond to. The brown coat is the one you make flat and plumb. Trying to do both in one pass over lath gives you a coat that neither keys properly nor floats flat, and one coat systems that genuinely go on in a single pass are specific proprietary products with fibre reinforcement, not ordinary base coat applied thicker.
How long between coats?
Longer than most people want. The general practice for traditional three coat work is to let the scratch coat cure before the brown coat, and to give the brown coat a substantially longer cure before the finish, keeping both damp rather than letting them dry out fast. Hot dry wind is the enemy, because it pulls water out of a coat that needs it for hydration and leaves you with a weak, dusty surface. Times vary with the product, the temperature and the humidity, so follow the manufacturer instructions for the mix you actually bought rather than a number from a web page.
Do I need lath over concrete block?
Usually not, if the block is clean, structurally sound, unpainted and unsealed, because stucco bonds directly to it. Lath goes on when the surface will not accept a bond: painted or sealed masonry, smooth precast, a mix of substrates on one wall, or any framed section. Dissimilar substrates on the same wall are worth lathing across in any case, because the joint between them is where the crack will show. If in doubt, a bonding agent or a dash coat can be used, and it is cheaper to test bond on a small patch than to strip a failed wall.
How much sand and cement if I mix my own base coat?
Base coat is commonly proportioned around one part cement to three parts sand by volume, with lime or a plasticiser added to make it workable enough to throw and float. The calculator splits the base coat volume on that ratio: for 40 cubic feet of base coat that is 10 cubic feet of cement, which is about ten 94 lb sacks of portland, and 30 cubic feet of sand, roughly a ton and a half. Note that sand is sold damp and bulks up when damp, which is why volume batching on site is done with a bucket and a consistent method rather than by weight.
