Why the price is an input and not a default

Cigarette prices in the United States are set less by the manufacturer than by tax. Federal excise applies everywhere, state excise varies by several dollars a pack, and a number of cities and counties add their own on top. The result is a retail spread wide enough that a pack costing well under six dollars in one state can cost close to fifteen in another, for the same product.

That makes any national average figure actively misleading: it will be far too high for a large group of readers and far too low for another. So the calculator asks. Whatever you actually hand over at the counter is the only price that produces a correct answer for you, and it is a number you already know.

The arithmetic

Daily spend is cigarettes divided by twenty, times the pack price. A pack a day at eight dollars is $8.00 a day, $56.00 a week and $2,920 a year, because a year is 365 days and not twelve lots of thirty. The monthly figure here is the annual divided by twelve, which comes to $243.33 rather than the $240 you get from a thirty-day month. Over a year the difference is a week and a half of smoking, which is why the annual figure is the one to look at.

The cumulative line applies your current price to every past year. That is arithmetically simple and directionally wrong: prices were lower, sometimes substantially, so real historical spending was less than the figure shown. It is there as a sense of scale, not as a reconstruction of your bank statements.

What the investment figure does and does not mean

Compounding the monthly amount is a way of showing that a recurring expense has a size beyond its sum, not a claim about markets. The calculation treats the money as paid in monthly, growing at the rate you entered, with no tax, no fees, no inflation adjustment and no possibility of a loss. Every one of those simplifications flatters the result.

Set the return to zero if any of that bothers you. The resulting number is just the money, which is a defensible figure and is usually large enough to make the point on its own.

The fields are labelled for cigarettes but the arithmetic does not care. For a product sold in a comparable unit, work out your cost per day and enter it in a way that produces that daily figure — for example, a pod that lasts two days and costs six dollars is three dollars a day, which is the same as twenty cigarettes at three dollars a pack in this calculator. Add hardware separately, because devices, coils, batteries and chargers are a recurring cost that a per-unit price hides. On the health side, this page makes no comparative claims about any of these products; regulators and public health bodies publish assessments and they are where that question belongs.

Why does the calculator not tell me the average price of a pack?

Because a single national figure would be wrong for most readers, and wrong by a lot. What return rate should I put in?

Whatever you would actually expect from where the money would go, or zero. Five percent is the placeholder and it is a middling assumption for a diversified long-term portfolio before tax, fees and inflation, none of which the model accounts for. If the money would go into a savings account, use the account rate. If it would go into paying down a debt, the equivalent return is the interest rate on that debt, which for a credit card balance is likely much higher than any investment assumption. And if you find the whole exercise speculative, zero gives you the plain sum, which is the honest floor.

How do I handle smoking that varies day to day?

Use a weekly count divided by seven rather than guessing at a daily figure, since most people who smoke variably underestimate the busy days. If you smoke ten on weekdays and twenty-five at weekends, that is ninety-eight a week, or fourteen a day. The same approach handles buying by the carton: divide the carton price by ten to get a per-pack price, which is usually lower than the single-pack price and is what you should enter.
