Where the one inch per ten feet ratio comes from
Sign shops have used a legibility ratio for decades: about one inch of letter height buys about ten feet of reading distance. Three inch letters carry roughly thirty feet, twelve inch letters roughly a hundred and twenty. It is a trade rule of thumb that has survived because it is close enough often enough, not because it is a published standard or a measured constant. Nobody derived it from an eye chart. It is a compromise between what people can technically resolve and what they will actually read without effort.
The reason it needs adjusting is that "readable" is doing a lot of work in that sentence. There is a distance at which you can tell a letter is a letter, a longer one at which you can guess a word from its shape, and a much shorter one at which you take in a whole line without slowing down. The ratio sits somewhere in the middle. Whether it lands in the right place for your sign depends on what the viewer is doing while they read it.
The four things that break the ratio
The multipliers in this calculator are trade adjustments, applied to the base figure the ratio gives you. They stack, which is the part people underestimate.

A storefront sign read at thirty feet in daylight and a road sign read at three hundred feet at dusk in low contrast are not the same problem scaled by ten. They are the same problem scaled by twenty or more, and that is why the second sign so often gets built too small.
Cap height, not the height of the panel
The number this calculator produces is cap height: the height of a capital letter from baseline to the top. It is not the height of the sign face, and it is not the height of a lowercase letter with an ascender and descender. If you set a line in a typeface with a small x-height, the lowercase body will read considerably smaller than the cap height suggests, and the sign will underperform its measurement. Condensed faces read smaller still, because stroke spacing matters as much as height at distance. If you are going to compress the type to fit a fixed panel, add height back.
Stroke weight has the same effect in the opposite direction. Very thin strokes disappear at distance before the letterform does, especially in low contrast or against a bright sky. Very heavy strokes close up the counters inside letters like a, e and g, and the word turns into a row of blobs. Both failures show up on site and not on the screen.
Contrast is cheaper than size
If the height the calculator returns is larger than the panel you have, the first thing to change is not the type. Dark copy on a light field, or light copy on a genuinely dark field, will outread a bigger sign that puts a mid tone on a mid tone. Removing a photographic background from behind the copy will do more than another two inches of letter. Colour pairs that look strong on a monitor at arm's length — red on green, blue on black, yellow on white — flatten out at distance because the luminance difference is small even when the hue difference is large. Squint at the design. If the copy vanishes, the sign will not work no matter what size you build it.
Permits, codes and accessibility
Nothing on this page tells you what you are allowed to install. Sign regulation in the United States is municipal: sign size, height, area, setback from the property line, illumination, and whether the sign is permitted at all are set by the local zoning or sign ordinance, and they vary from one town to the next along the same road. Permits are commonly required and enforcement is real, including orders to remove a sign that has already been paid for and installed.
Separately, accessibility requirements are federal and carry specific technical criteria for the signs they cover — things like character height, stroke width, finish, contrast, mounting height and location, and tactile and braille characters on certain signage. Those criteria are prescriptive and are not the trade ratio on this page. A height calculated here has nothing to do with meeting them, and you must not treat it as if it does. If a sign identifies a permanent room or space, marks an exit, or gives direction inside a facility, the requirements apply and the details belong with a sign shop that works to them and with the local authority having jurisdiction. Ask before you fabricate, not after.
Installation is its own hazard. Anything mounted at height needs the right access equipment and training, and anything with a power feed in it — internally illuminated cabinets, channel letters, neon, LED modules — is licensed electrical work in most places. This page gives you a letter height and nothing about how to hang it or wire it.

It is a trade rule of thumb, widely used and roughly right for a stationary or slow-moving viewer reading high contrast copy in decent light. It is not a standard, it was not derived from vision research, and it does not appear in any code. Treat it the way a sign shop does: a starting figure that gets adjusted for the conditions, then checked by standing at the actual distance with a mock-up. The ratio field is editable on purpose, because shops that do a lot of highway work use a longer ratio and shops doing interior wayfinding often use a shorter one.
Does this tell me whether my sign meets accessibility requirements?
No, and you should not use it that way. Accessibility requirements for signage in the United States are federal and prescriptive, covering character height, stroke, case, spacing, finish, contrast, mounting position and tactile and braille characters for the signs they apply to. Those are specific measured criteria tied to the type of sign and where it is installed. A legibility ratio for a viewing distance is an entirely different calculation and satisfying one says nothing about the other. If your sign identifies a room, marks an exit or directs people inside a building, get the specification from a sign shop that fabricates to those requirements and confirm with the authority having jurisdiction.
Why does the height double for a sign read from a moving vehicle?
Because the constraint stops being acuity and becomes time. From four hundred feet at forty five miles an hour you have about six seconds before you pass the sign, and you are not looking at it for all six. Within that window the driver has to notice the sign, find the copy, read it and act on it, while also driving. Larger letters do not just become resolvable earlier, they become resolvable far enough out that there is time left to use them. That is also why a road sign that works has three or four words on it. Sizing the type correctly and then putting a paragraph on the panel wastes the size.
How do I check the height before I build the sign?
Print the copy at full size on paper or plot it on cheap vinyl, tape it up where the sign will go, and walk or drive to the distance you care about. Do it at the time of day the sign matters most, which is often dusk rather than noon. This takes an hour and catches every problem that a calculation cannot see: a tree in the sightline, a wall the sun blows out at four o clock, a competing sign fifty feet closer, a background that eats the colour. Every experienced sign person does some version of this, and it is the only real test.
What letter height should the phone number be?
Smaller than the name, and the calculator defaults to sixty percent of it. The reasoning is that the two elements have different jobs at different distances. The name has to be readable from as far away as possible so people know what the building is. The phone number, address or hours only need to be readable once someone has decided to care, which happens closer. Setting all the copy at the same height is a common mistake and it makes the sign louder without making it work better, because the eye has nothing to land on first.
