What is actually in the tank
A septic tank is not a container of sewage. It is a settling chamber with three layers, and the whole design depends on those layers staying where they are. Heavy solids fall to the bottom as sludge. Fats, oils and anything buoyant rise to the top as scum. Between them sits a band of comparatively clear liquid, and that band is what leaves through the outlet and goes to the drainfield.
Everything about the tank exists to protect that middle band. The inlet baffle drops incoming water below the scum without stirring the bottom. The outlet baffle or tee draws from the middle rather than the top or the bottom. The length of the tank gives water time to slow down and let particles fall out. When people talk about a tank failing, they usually mean this separation stopped working, not that the tank leaked.
The interval is a division, not a schedule
Sludge and scum accumulate at a rate roughly proportional to the number of people using the system. The tank has a fixed volume. So the years between pump-outs is the room you allow for solids divided by the annual accumulation.
Years ≈ (working volume × share allowed for solids) ÷ (people × gallons per person per year)
Everything else is detail. Which means the interval scales inversely with occupancy and the fall is steep at the small end. Doubling the household halves the interval. Working volume is measured to the outlet, not to the lid
This is where most people overstate their tank. The liquid level in a working tank sits at the invert of the outlet pipe, because that is where it spills. Everything above that line is freeboard and it holds air, not water. A concrete box measured on the outside can be a third larger than the liquid it actually holds once you subtract wall thickness and the space above the outlet.
Volume in gallons is length × width × liquid depth in feet, multiplied by 7.48. A tank 8 by 4 feet with 4 feet of liquid holds 128 cubic feet, which is 957 gallons. If you measured 5 feet of depth because that is where the lid is, you would have called it 1,197 and been out by a quarter — and the interval you calculated would be a quarter too long.
Best case, you do not measure at all: the pumper who empties it knows what it takes, the permit on file at the health department records what was installed, and many tanks carry a stamp on the lid or the riser.

The thing that has to be said once, plainly
A septic tank is a confined space and it is lethal. The gases above the liquid displace oxygen and hydrogen sulphide paralyses the sense of smell before it kills, so there is no warning from inside. People die every year going in after a dropped tool, a phone, or to look at a baffle, and rescuers die going in after them. Nobody opens a tank and leans in, and nobody enters one. If something is in the tank, it stays there until a pumper with confined-space equipment and a trained standby crew deals with it.
The everyday version of that warning is simpler: do not open the tank. There is no maintenance a homeowner performs inside a septic tank. Measuring sludge depth, checking baffles and pumping are done from outside by someone equipped for it, and the lid stays bolted the rest of the time — which also matters because an unsecured septic lid is a hole a child falls into.

A disposal does not send water to the tank in any meaningful quantity, it sends solids, and solids are the thing the interval is a division of. Why does my tank need pumping more often than my neighbour's identical one?
Almost always occupancy, and after that habits. Two houses built the same year by the same builder with the same tank will diverge completely once one holds two retired people and the other five. Beyond that: a disposal, cooking with a lot of grease, anything flushed that does not break down, and laundry concentrated into one day rather than spread out. None of those change the tank; all of them change the divisor or the settling.
Can I pump the tank myself or add a treatment product?
Pumping is a licensed activity in most places and the waste is a regulated material that has to go to an approved receiving facility, so it is not a homeowner job for legal reasons before you even reach the confined-space ones. As for additives, the position taken by most health departments is that a healthy tank does not need them and some products can do harm by breaking up the scum layer and sending material to the drainfield.
