The annual total is the wrong number

Add up a maintenance list and the annual total tends to read as trivial — the sort of number that fits inside a single working week spread across twelve months. The list still does not get done, and the reason becomes visible as soon as those hours are put into seasons.

On the opening list the year comes to 27.3 hours, and 15 of them fall in the fall: gutters twice, storm windows twice, the irrigation blown out, the chimney checked. At four hours a session that is four sessions against five weekends nominally available, and 55% of the year's work inside one quarter of it. It fits, with five hours to spare, and the fall is also the season where weather takes weekends away without warning.

Why the peak cannot simply be moved

The obvious response is to spread the load, and for some of the list that works. For the heaviest items it does not, because they are pinned to weather rather than to a calendar. Gutters have to be cleared after the leaves are down and before anything freezes in them. Irrigation has to be blown out before the first hard freeze and not months earlier. Storm windows have a similar window at both ends of the year.

That is why the page reports sessions needed against sessions available per season rather than for the year as a whole. A season that is over by six hours does not borrow from a spring with room in it. It borrows from next year, which is how deferral starts.

A few tasks are most of the time

The concentration line is the other thing worth reading. On the opening list, three tasks out of ten account for half the hours — the gutters at 6 hours, the storm windows at 5 and the caulk walk-round at 4. That is the ordinary shape, and it points at where handing work over actually changes a calendar. Paying somebody to take four of the small jobs off the list frees about an hour and a half; handing over the gutters alone frees six.

It also means the estimates that matter are the three big ones. Being wrong by half an hour on the filters moves the year by 0.4 hours and the peak season not at all. Being wrong by half about the gutters moves the fall figure by three. Time the big jobs once with a phone and the rest of the list can stay a guess.

What does "any" do to the seasons?

It splits the task evenly across all four, to the nearest hundredth of an hour, so the four season figures still add up exactly to the annual total. That is a convenience rather than a plan. In practice, tasks with no season attached drift into whichever season is already busiest, because there is never a particular reason to do them this weekend rather than next.

How many weekends should I say I have?

Fewer than you think. A season holds about thirteen, and between travel, weather, family and the weekends that simply go, the number genuinely available for house work is a good deal smaller than that. The figure is a preference rather than a fact, and nothing here supplies one, so the useful approach is to enter what last year actually looked like rather than what this year is supposed to.

My estimates are probably wrong. Does that matter?

Only for the big items. Half the hours on a typical list sit in two or three tasks, so an error on the largest one moves its season by hours while an error on the smallest moves nothing. If you are going to time anything properly, time the longest job on the list, and leave the rest as guesses.
