The conversion that makes the target legible
A hundred books a year is an abstraction. A hundred books at 300 pages each is 30,000 pages. At 1.2 pages a minute that is 25,000 minutes, or 417 hours, or 68 minutes every single day of the year with no days off. Written that way, most people can tell immediately whether it is a plan or a wish.
The reverse direction is more useful. Thirty minutes a day at the same speed is 36 pages a day, 13,140 pages a year, and about 44 books of 300 pages. So a target of 40 fits comfortably inside half an hour a day; a target of 100 requires either roughly 70 minutes a day or a deliberate shift toward shorter books. Both are legitimate choices. The calculator sizes the choice rather than making it.
Measuring your actual speed
Almost nobody knows their reading speed, and the guesses people make are usually too high because they remember their best sessions. Measuring takes ten minutes: read the book you are already reading at your normal pace for ten minutes, count the pages, divide by ten.
Do it on two or three different books and the spread is striking. Rough figures for typical adult reading:

Page size varies too, so pages per minute is not a portable unit between a mass-market paperback and a large-format hardback. For planning, use the low end of your measured range. A plan built on your best day fails on every other day.
Pages are a steadier target than books
Counting books quietly rewards choosing short ones. Three 200-page paperbacks and one 600-page novel represent identical reading, but one shows as three and the other as one. Anyone tracking a book count for long enough starts, usually without noticing, to pick the thinner option.
A weekly page target has no such bias, which is why the calculator surfaces it alongside the daily minutes. Fifty-two books of 300 pages is 300 pages a week — a number you can check on a Sunday in about four seconds, and one that treats a doorstop fairly.
The counter-argument for book counts is real, though: finishing something is a clean, satisfying unit, and page targets can drift into weeks of grinding through a book you have stopped enjoying. Plenty of people run both, something like 250 pages a week and 24 books a year, and let whichever is behind pull the other along.
Where the daily minutes actually come from
Thirty minutes a day sounds like a commitment until it is broken up. A twenty-minute train ride each way is forty minutes; reading half of it is twenty. Ten minutes at lunch and ten before sleep makes forty. The field on this page asking what time you can give it wants that sum, not an intention.
Fragment quality differs, though. Fiction that depends on momentum reads badly in six-minute pieces, because the re-entry cost eats the fragment. Essay collections, short chapters and practical non-fiction survive fragmentation well. Matching the book to the slot is a more effective adjustment than trying to find longer slots.
Audiobooks and playback speed
Audio converts time that could not otherwise be reading — driving, walking, washing up — into reading time, which is a genuine expansion rather than a reallocation. Playback speed then compresses it further, and this is where the arithmetic gets optimistic.
The calculator treats 1.5x as 1.5 times the throughput. For familiar material that holds up well; most regular audiobook listeners settle somewhere between 1.3x and 1.8x and report no loss. For a book introducing unfamiliar concepts, higher speeds produce rewinding, and enough rewinding makes the total time longer than it would have been at 1x. If your experience does not match the estimate, reduce the speed figure or the audio share rather than abandoning the model.
Projections in the middle of a year
Books finished divided by months elapsed, multiplied by twelve, is a linear projection, and reading is not linear. It assumes December looks like March. In practice reading rises during holidays and collapses during busy work periods, and a projection made in early January from a single fast week is close to meaningless.
What the projection does well is arrive early enough to be useful. Eight books by the end of May projects to 19 against a target of 24. That gap is five books over seven months, which is recoverable by adding about ten minutes a day. The same gap discovered in October is not recoverable, and the useful response then is to revise the target rather than to sprint. Lowering a number you set arbitrarily in January is not a failure.

How many minutes a day is 52 books a year?
At 300 pages a book and 1.2 pages a minute, about 36 minutes every day of the year. That is 15,600 pages, 13,000 minutes, or 217 hours. Change either input and it moves a lot: at 250-page books it drops to 30 minutes, and at 0.8 pages a minute for denser material it rises to 54. The reason the figure surprises people is that a book a week sounds like a weekend activity, while the arithmetic says it is a daily one.
How do I find my reading speed?
Read the book you are currently on at your normal pace for exactly ten minutes, count the pages covered, divide by ten. That is your pages per minute for that book. Repeat on a different kind of book and you will usually find a two- or threefold difference, which is the real finding. For planning purposes use the lower number rather than the average: a plan built around your fastest reading fails on every day that is not your fastest.
Should I count audiobooks?
That is a definitional question and nobody else's to answer. If you count them, this calculator will fold the playback speed into an effective pages-per-minute figure so the target stays in one currency. Two cautions. Audio at above about 1.5x on unfamiliar material generates rewinding, and rewinding can make the total time longer than normal speed would have been. And audio is far harder to skim, so a book you would have read selectively in 90 minutes takes its full nine hours. Is a book count the right thing to track?
It has one clear advantage, which is that finishing something is unambiguous and satisfying, and one clear flaw, which is that it rewards choosing shorter books. Three 200-page paperbacks and one 600-page novel are the same reading and score 3 to 1. If your books vary a lot in length, the weekly page target shown alongside is the fairer measure. My projection says I will miss the target. What now?
Look at when you are asking. In May, a five-book gap over seven remaining months is about ten extra minutes a day, which is a real and achievable adjustment. In October the same gap is not closeable by effort and the sensible move is to revise the number. The target was chosen arbitrarily in the first place, and there is no external standard being failed. The other lever, if the count matters, is book length — reading a run of shorter books closes a count gap far faster than adding minutes does.
