What the months-plus-one rule actually is

It is a mnemonic. A three month old puppy gets four hours, a four month old gets five, and so on, usually with an unstated ceiling somewhere around four or five hours because nobody seriously intends an eight month old to sit in a crate for nine. It survives because it is easy to remember and it lands in roughly the right region for a lot of puppies, which is a different claim from being correct for yours.

This calculator uses it because a timetable needs a starting number, and then it does the part the rule leaves out: turning that number into actual clock times across your actual waking day, and checking it against the hours your house is empty. That second check is where most crate plans fall apart, and it falls apart on paper before it falls apart in the house, which is the useful place for it to happen.

Reading the timetable it draws

The breaks are spaced evenly rather than at the maximum block length, which means they come slightly more often than the block strictly requires. That is deliberate. Evenly spaced breaks are easier to remember and they leave slack, and slack is what absorbs the morning that ran late.

  • The night stretch is whatever is left after your waking day, and it is usually longer than the daytime block. Most households accept a night break early on and drop it as the puppy grows, rather than trying to hold the daytime figure through the night.
  • Mealtimes are placed only so the timetable looks like a real day. Nothing on this page has any opinion about what goes in the bowl or how much of it.
  • The last break before settling is the one people skip when they are tired, and it is the one that decides how the night goes.

The empty-house problem

Enter the longest stretch nobody is home and the calculator divides it by the number of visits somebody can make, then compares the longest resulting segment against the block. When that segment is longer, the page says so plainly and tells you how many visits would close the gap.

It says so plainly because this is the one part of crate planning that cannot be solved by rearranging the schedule. A nine hour workday and a three month old puppy do not reconcile through better timing. They reconcile through a person, and the options are the ones people actually use: a neighbour, a paid walker, a daycare arrangement, a change to who works from where, or a decision to bring the puppy home at a different point in the year. Seeing the gap in hours makes that conversation shorter.

When to ignore everything on this page

The schedule is arithmetic on an age. It cannot see a puppy that panics in the crate, one that settles instantly and sleeps through, or one that is unwell. A puppy in genuine distress is telling you the plan is wrong, and the answer to that is a trainer who can watch what is happening and a veterinarian who can rule out the things a trainer cannot. Neither of those is replaceable by a longer or shorter block.

How long can a puppy be left in a crate?

Nobody can answer that from an age alone, and this page does not claim to. The months-plus-one rule gives a starting block and this calculator turns it into a timetable, but the real answer depends on the individual puppy, how crate training has gone so far, and anything a veterinarian knows about that particular animal. Treat the number here as a first draft of a plan. If the puppy is distressed at that length, the length is wrong, and the right people to help you fix it are a veterinarian and a qualified trainer rather than a formula.

What if I work full time and the numbers do not fit?

Then they do not fit, and the calculator will tell you by how many hours rather than softening it. This is the most common outcome and it has ordinary solutions: someone coming in during the day, a paid walker, a daycare arrangement, splitting the day between two people in the household, or timing when the puppy arrives around a period when someone can be home. What does not work is stretching the block and hoping. Knowing the gap in hours is what makes it possible to price the options against each other.

Should the night stretch be as short as the daytime blocks?

In practice it usually is not, and most households do not try to make it so. Sleeping through is different from being awake and confined, and puppies commonly manage a longer stretch at night than the same figure would suggest during the day. The calculator shows the night span next to the block so you can see the difference rather than deciding it for you. Early on, a break part way through the night is normal, and it typically shortens and then disappears as the puppy grows. When it should is not something arithmetic settles.

Does the calculator know anything about my breed?

No, and that is intentional. Breed and size do change the picture, but the way they change it runs straight into health territory, and this page stays out of that entirely. It does arithmetic on an age in months, your waking hours and your own ceiling for a block. Everything about what a particular breed needs, what a particular puppy can manage, and whether anything is wrong belongs with a veterinarian who can examine the animal.

Why does the schedule get more breaks than the block length requires?

Because the breaks are spread evenly across the waking day rather than pushed out to the maximum. If the day is eleven hours and the block is four, three blocks of exactly four hours would run past bedtime, so the page uses three breaks at roughly three and a half hours each instead. The result is a schedule with a little slack in it, which is what survives contact with a real morning. If you would rather run right up to the block length, use the times as an upper bound and move the earlier ones later.
