The roll width is the specification, not the square footage
Every other sheet material on a building gets seamed, lapped or butted, so ordering it is an area problem. Screen is not. A splined panel is one continuous piece from groove to groove, because a join in the middle of a bay has no way to be held and no way to stay flat. That makes the take-off a fitting problem before it is a quantity problem.
Work a normal porch. Six bays at 34 by 72 inches and two at 52 by 72, with an inch and a half of screen held past the opening on each side while the spline goes in. The cut sizes are 37 by 75 and 55 by 75. Off a 48 inch roll the 37 inch cuts lie upright and eat 75 inches of roll length each; the 55 inch cuts do not fit upright, so they turn on their side, run 75 inches across a 48 inch roll — and they do not fit that way either. Both dimensions exceed the roll, and those two bays cannot be screened in one piece at all.

The last row is the one worth noticing. On an 84 inch roll the 75 inch height lies across the width, so each panel consumes only its own cut width of roll length — 37 inches for a narrow bay instead of 75. On a 60 inch roll every panel has to stand upright and the eight of them take 600 inches, or 50 ft. On an 84 inch roll they all turn and take 332 inches, or 27.67 ft, before waste. Wide rolls are dearer per foot and often cheaper per porch, and the only way to know which way it falls is to run both.
Why old screen porches have a rail across the middle
Because the roll widths that were normal when they were built could not reach a full storey, and dividing the opening was the answer. It still is. A 72 inch opening split by one horizontal rail becomes two bays of roughly 34 inches, which a 36 inch roll takes comfortably. The rail costs a piece of stock and a groove, and it buys you the cheapest roll on the shelf plus a panel small enough to spline single-handed. It also gives the screen a mid-span support, which matters more than people expect on a bay that has a dog leaning on it.
Splitting is the answer whenever the calculator says an opening does not fit. There is no material solution, because there is no seam. Buying more of a roll that is too narrow gets you exactly as far as buying one of it.
Spline is a three-way fit
The spline, the groove and the thickness of the mesh have to suit each other. A groove that takes a 0.140 spline with plain fiberglass will often need a size down once heavy pet-resistant mesh is doubled into it, because the mesh itself is taking up part of the groove. Going the other way, a spline too small for the groove lets go the first time the porch gets a gust through it, usually at a corner. The mesh supplier publishes the pairing; guessing it costs a whole panel and the afternoon that went into it.
The perimeter figure this page gives is the groove run, and it is the same number whether you are buying spline or ordering stop. Add the same waste percentage to both, because the offcut at the end of a spline roll is the same problem as the offcut at the end of a screen roll.

What width screen do I need for a porch?
Take the tallest opening, add the screen you will hold on each side while splining, and that is the minimum roll width if the panels go in upright. On a 72 inch bay with an inch and a half each side that is 75 inches, so a 72 inch roll is not enough and an 84 will do it. The other route is to turn the panel on its side, which needs the roll to cover the cut width instead — usually much easier — and there is a third route, which is to divide the opening with a rail so a narrower roll works. Run all three before buying.
Can I join two pieces of screen in one opening?
Not in any way that lasts. There is nothing to hold a join in the field of a panel, the mesh is under tension across the whole bay, and a lapped seam catches the eye from across the yard and lets insects through where it puckers. The right answer to an opening too big for the roll is a mullion: a real piece of stock, grooved on both sides, dividing it into two panels that each get their own spline. That is a framing change, which is why it is worth discovering at the take-off stage rather than with the roll already open.
How much extra screen do I cut past the opening?
Enough to hold onto and to keep tension while the spline goes in, which is commonly an inch to a couple of inches each side. Less than that and the edge you are pulling on is inside the groove before you have tension; much more and you are paying for offcuts and fighting a flapping edge. Whatever you decide, put the real figure in the field, because it adds to both dimensions of every cut and it is what decides a marginal roll-width fit.
Does the mesh type change the take-off?
The quantities barely move, the spline may well have to. Pet-resistant mesh is several times thicker than plain fiberglass, so it takes up more of the groove and often needs a smaller spline than the same frame uses normally. Solar screen and no-see-um weaves are denser rather than thicker, which does not change the spline much but does cut the airflow noticeably, and airflow is usually why the porch is screened rather than glazed. The supplier publishes the spline size for their mesh; that is the number to use.
Is screening a porch a structural job?
The screening is not. Whatever the screening is fixed to usually is. Turning an open porch into a screened one means posts, a beam over the openings, a header at the door and, if the roof is being touched at all, a connection to the house. None of that is on this page, and none of it should be settled by a materials calculator. What this page does is tell you how much mesh, spline and stop the openings take once somebody else has decided what the openings are.
