Two ways to avoid a swing, two different bills
A swinging door needs a quarter circle of empty floor. A pocket door and a barn door both give that floor back, and both pay for it in wall. The pocket door pays by making the wall hollow for roughly twice the door width. The barn door pays by requiring the same length of wall to be flat, solid and permanently unused. Which of the two is available is not a preference, it is a fact about the wall you already have, and it is usually settled in five minutes with a stud finder and a look at where the light switches are.
Pocket doors: why they so rarely fit an existing wall
The rough opening for a pocket door frame is about twice the door width plus a hardware allowance. A 32 inch door needs roughly 65 inches of rough opening, and once you add the strike jamb and casing at each end the wall gives up something over five and a half feet in a straight run with nothing in it. That is the requirement people are surprised by, because a swinging 32 inch door needs about 34 inches of wall.
Then come the disqualifiers, and any one of them is fatal. The pocket cannot contain a stud that carries anything, so a bearing wall is out unless the header spans the whole assembly and is sized for it. It cannot contain a cable, a pipe, a duct or an electrical box anywhere along its length, and rerouting a circuit around a pocket is often more work than the door. It cannot have anything screwed to it afterwards, which rules out a wall that was going to carry cabinets, a handrail or a heavy mirror. And the finished wall is measurably less stiff, because the studs in the pocket run are split into two thin halves connected only at top and bottom.
The practical result is that pocket doors are straightforward in new framing and awkward in renovation, and that a false wall built in front of the existing one is the fallback. That costs the depth of the new framing across the whole run of the wall, which in a bathroom is often exactly the depth you did not have.
Barn doors: the wall beside the opening and the wall above it
A barn door slab is wider than the opening, because a door that slides across a wall covers the opening rather than filling it. Two inches of overlap each side is a common working figure, so a 32 inch opening takes a 36 inch door. That door then has to park somewhere, which means the wall beside the opening has to be clear for the full door width plus a little, and clear means clear: no switches, no outlets, no thermostat, no picture rail, no returning corner.
The dimension that actually kills barn door projects is the one above the head. The door hangs from rollers, the rollers sit above the door, the track sits above the rollers, and the mounting board sits behind all of it. Add a couple of inches of overlap over the head and the track top ends up four or five inches above the head casing on a typical installation. In a standard eight foot wall with an 80 inch opening there is around sixteen inches of wall above the head, which is usually workable, but the moment there is a transom, a soffit, a bulkhead, crown moulding, or a ceiling that drops, it stops being workable and the door has to shrink.

None of that makes a barn door a bad choice. It makes it a specific choice, good for a pantry, a laundry, a closet or an office off a hallway, and poor for a bathroom or a bedroom where somebody expects the door to actually close something off.
Deciding between the two, and the third option
Run the numbers on this page for both types and look at what the wall has in it. If the wall is a non-bearing partition, empty of services, and being framed anyway, the pocket door gives a better result: it disappears completely, it seals against a jamb like a normal door, and it takes no wall surface. If the wall is existing, or has anything in it, the barn door is usually the only sliding option left, and the question becomes whether the head clearance and the parking wall exist.
The third option is the one people skip past, which is keeping the swinging door and reversing it. Changing the hinge side or the swing direction is a fraction of the cost of either slider and it solves a surprising share of the cases, so it is worth testing before committing.
