A deck that cuts a step down one side or leaves a ribbed finish is almost never a blade problem. It is four measurements: the blade tip at the front, at the rear, at the left and at the right, taken off a flat floor with the tyres at whatever pressure the machine documentation calls for. The numbers are small — a rake of a quarter inch and a side tolerance of an eighth are typical of what the paperwork asks for — which is why guessing at it does not work and why a thread pitch turns the guess into a countable number of turns on a wrench.

The blade you measured, not the deck size on the sticker.
Swing the blade so it points front to back, then measure the floor to the leading tip. Tyres at the pressure your machine documentation specifies, on a flat floor, machine off.

Count the threads across an inch of the adjuster rod, or read it off the fastener size. A 1/2-13 rod moves 1/13 of an inch a turn.
Leave at 1 if the adjuster pushes the deck directly. If it works through a lever or a bellcrank, this is the ratio, and the only reliable way to get it is to turn the adjuster a known amount and measure what the tip did.

Four numbers off a flat floor

Everything on this page comes from measuring the blade tip to the floor at four positions: swing the blade front to back and read the leading and trailing tips, then swing it side to side and read the left and right. With the defaults in the form — 3.125 front, 3.375 rear, 3.25 left, 3.375 right — the deck sits with 0.250 in of rake, nose down, and 0.125 in of step from left to right.

Over a 21 in blade, a quarter inch of rake is 0.682 degrees. That is a slope you cannot see and cannot feel with a hand on the deck, and it is the difference between a deck that cuts once cleanly and one that recuts the clipping on the way past. The numbers are small because the effect is geometric, not because it is unimportant.

Why nose down at all

The front of the deck meets the grass first. With the front tip slightly lower, the grass is cut once at the front and the rest of the deck moves it out; with the deck flat or nose up, the rear of the blade passes over grass that has already been cut and cuts it again, which throws power away, packs the deck and leaves a finish that looks chewed. How much rake belongs on your machine is in your operator manual, and the page takes it as an input for exactly that reason.

Turning inches into turns

An adjuster rod with 13 threads to the inch moves 0.077 in per full turn, so closing a 0.125 in side-to-side step is a turn and a half at one side, or three quarters of a turn at each side if you split it. That is the whole reason to count threads: half an inch and one and a half turns are the same instruction, and only one of them can be carried out with a wrench without measuring again after every move.

The lever ratio field matters on machines where the adjuster does not push the deck directly. If a bellcrank sits between the rod and the hanger, one inch at the rod is not one inch at the tip, and no thread count will tell you what it is. Turn the adjuster a known number of turns, measure the tip before and after, and divide — that is your ratio, and it is specific to your machine.

What the lowest tip does

The grass does not average anything. Whichever tip is lowest sets the height of cut, so a deck reading 3.125, 3.375, 3.250 and 3.375 is cutting at 3.125 regardless of where the height lever is set. That is a spread of a quarter inch across four measurements, and on undulating ground it is the difference between a clean pass and a scalped high spot on one side only.

It is also why chasing a cut height with the lever after finding an uneven deck does not work. Moving the lever moves all four points together and leaves the spread exactly where it was.

The two things that spoil the measurement

Tyre pressure and floor flatness, in that order. A rear tyre that has lost pressure drops that corner by more than the tolerance a manual typically asks for, so the deck can measure badly while being perfectly adjusted. And a garage floor that was poured with fall to a drain has more slope across the width of a mower than the rake being chased. Setting the pressures the documentation calls for and checking the floor with a long straightedge costs a few minutes and removes both.

How do I check if my mower deck is level?

Park on a flat floor with the tyres at the pressure the documentation gives, swing one blade front to back and measure the floor to each tip, then swing the same blade side to side and measure again. Four numbers. The difference front to rear is the rake, the difference left to right is the side step, and both are compared against figures from your own operator manual.

How much rake should a mower deck have?

Why does my mower cut lower on one side?

Because one side of the deck hangs lower, and the grass is cut by the lowest tip rather than by any average.
