Why the number lands so far above a deck live load

Water weighs 8.34 pounds a gallon and a hot tub holds several hundred gallons. A seven foot square tub with thirty inches of water and a fill factor of 75 percent holds about 690 gallons, which is 5,730 pounds of water on its own. Add a dry tub weight around 850 pounds and five occupants at 185 pounds each, and the total lands near 7,500 pounds. That total sits on 49 square feet, so the framing under it sees roughly 150 pounds per square foot.

For comparison, decks are commonly designed to a live load allowance well under half of that, plus a small dead load for the decking and framing itself. The exact figure that applies to your deck comes from your jurisdiction and from whatever the deck was permitted to, which is why this calculator takes it as an input rather than printing one. Whatever number you put in, the ratio is usually startling, and the reason is not that the tub is unusually heavy. It is that the load is concentrated. A crowd of people on a deck spreads out and moves; a tub occupies one rectangle permanently and fills it with the densest thing anyone puts on a deck.

The fill factor is doing real work

A tub is not a rectangular prism, and treating it as one overstates the water by a wide margin. The moulded shell curves in at the bottom, the seats displace volume around the perimeter, the footwell is a smaller box inside a larger one, and the water line sits below the top of the cabinet. The fill factor is the fraction of the box-shaped volume that is actually water.

If the specification sheet for your model gives a water capacity in gallons, use that number instead of guessing, and treat the fill factor here as a sanity check on it. Manufacturers list capacity to a fill line, and the tub is often run a little below that.

Where the load actually goes

Pounds per square foot is a comparison figure, not a description of what the joists experience. The tub bears on its cabinet perimeter and, on most models, on a moulded base or a set of pads rather than uniformly across the footprint. That concentrates the line load onto whichever joists happen to fall under the edges of the cabinet, and onto the beam and posts under those joists.

The practical consequence is that a deck can be adequate on paper for an average pressure and still be wrong, because the load lands on three joists instead of twelve. It also means the answer is rarely a small fix. Decks built for tubs generally have posts and footings placed under the tub specifically, joists doubled or spaced closer in that bay, and a beam sized for the point load rather than for a uniform one. Water safety, which is the part that has nothing to do with weight

A hot tub is standing water at a depth that drowns a small child, and it is usually the only such water on a property. A cover that latches is a safety device, not an accessory, and unsupervised access to the water is how children die in hot tubs. Latch it every time the tub is not in use, keep it latched while the tub is uncovered and unattended even briefly, and treat any route a child can take to the water as the problem to solve.

What this page will not do

It will not tell you whether your deck can take the tub. That is a structural judgement about a specific structure that nobody can make from a form, and the failure mode when the judgement is wrong is a deck collapsing with people in a tub on it. Take the total weight and the footprint from here, and take them to your building department first, because in most places putting a tub on a deck is permitted work and the department will tell you what they need to see. Questions people ask

How much does a filled hot tub weigh?

For a common six or seven person spa, somewhere between 4,000 and 9,000 pounds filled and occupied. The dry weight is usually 700 to 1,000 pounds. The water is the rest, and it dominates: at 8.34 pounds a gallon, 500 gallons is 4,170 pounds and 700 gallons is 5,840. Occupants add a few hundred to a thousand more. The figure that matters for a deck is the total with the tub full and as many people in it as it seats, because that is the condition it will actually be in, not an average.

Can a normal deck hold a hot tub?

Usually not without work, and this calculator deliberately does not answer it for your deck. The load per square foot under a filled tub is commonly well over a hundred pounds, which is several times what an ordinary residential deck is framed to carry, and the load is concentrated rather than spread. Decks that carry tubs are generally built for it, with posts and footings directly beneath the tub, closer or doubled joists, and a beam sized for the point load. Getting that assessment right needs someone who can see the framing, the footings, the soil and the connection to the house. Start with your building department, since this is permitted work almost everywhere.

Why is the fill factor not 100 percent?

Because a tub is a moulded shell, not a box. Seats, a lounger, the footwell step and the curve of the floor all take up space that a length times width times depth calculation counts as water. On a seated spa the real volume is commonly 70 to 80 percent of the box figure. Using 100 percent would overstate the water by a quarter or more, which sounds conservative but is not useful: an inflated number invites people to dismiss the whole calculation. If the manufacturer lists a water capacity in gallons, that figure beats any fill factor you can guess.

Does it matter that the tub sits on a pad rather than the whole footprint?

It matters a great deal, and it makes the situation worse rather than better. Pounds per square foot averaged over the footprint is a comparison figure. The tub actually bears on its cabinet perimeter or on a set of base pads, so the load lands on whichever joists fall under those bearing points. A deck adequate for the average pressure can still be overloaded locally. Is a concrete slab a simpler answer?

Often, yes, and it is worth pricing before committing to reinforcing a deck. A slab moves the whole problem into soil bearing rather than framing, needs no beams or connections to the house, and does not have a ledger that has to carry any of it. It still needs thickness, reinforcement and a prepared base appropriate to the load and the ground, so it is not a trivial pour, and it is still permitted work.
