Two things called stretching
A lot of the confusion here comes from one word covering two different practices with different evidence behind them.
Static stretching means moving a joint to the end of its comfortable range and holding it there, typically for twenty to sixty seconds. It is the school-gym version: sit and reach for your toes, hold. Dynamic stretching means moving through a range repeatedly and under control — leg swings, arm circles, walking lunges, hip openers — without holding an end position. They feel similar and they do different jobs, and nearly every argument about whether you should stretch before training is really an argument about which of these two somebody has in mind.
What a warm-up is for
A warm-up has a specific and unmysterious job: raise muscle temperature, get blood moving, wake up the coordination for the thing you are about to do, and give you a low-stakes rehearsal of the movement pattern. Static stretching does almost none of that. It does not raise temperature meaningfully, it does not rehearse anything, and it does not prepare the nervous system for producing force.
The better-supported structure is a general warm-up followed by a specific one. Five to ten minutes of easy aerobic movement — walking, easy cycling, easy jogging — followed by dynamic movement through the ranges you are about to use, followed by the actual exercise done at a load light enough to be a rehearsal. For lifting, that last part means warm-up sets: the same movement, much lighter, working up. For running, it means starting the run slowly rather than at your target pace.

The two claims that need separating
Claim one: stretching before exercise prevents injury. This has been examined in a number of trials and reviews, largely in military recruits and athletic populations, and the general finding is that pre-exercise static stretching does not produce a meaningful reduction in injury rates. It is one of the more thoroughly tested pieces of conventional fitness wisdom and one of the ones that fared worst. Warming up, by contrast, does appear helpful, and structured programmes combining strength, balance and movement drills have shown injury reductions in team sports — but the active ingredient in those is not the stretching component.
Claim two: static stretching immediately before a hard effort reduces performance. This one has better support than most people expect. Holding long static stretches right before lifting or sprinting produces a small, temporary reduction in force and power output, more pronounced with longer holds. The effect is modest and mostly matters if you are testing a maximum or racing; it is not a reason for alarm if you stretched before a general session. It is a reason not to put a fifteen-minute stretching block immediately before your heaviest set of the week.
Some readers will have been taught the exact opposite of both of these, and taught it by people acting in good faith with the information available at the time. That is how this field usually works: confident advice arrives first and testing arrives later, and a lot of the testing has come out sideways to the advice.
So when does stretching belong
Flexibility is a trainable quality and static stretching is the standard way to train it. If you want more range at a joint — for a sport, for a lift you cannot get into, or because a position you need in daily life is uncomfortable — consistent static stretching over weeks does produce measurable gains. That is a training goal in its own right, with its own timeline, and it belongs in its own slot: after training, on a rest day, or at any time disconnected from a hard effort.

Mobility, flexibility, and a distinction worth having
Flexibility is how far a joint can be moved passively — how far somebody could push your leg if you relaxed completely. Mobility is how far you can move it yourself, under control, with the strength to do something at the end of the range. The distinction matters because passive range you cannot control is not particularly useful, and because a lot of people described as inflexible are actually strong-enough-but-restricted in a way that responds better to loaded movement than to holding a stretch.
This is the reason resistance training through a full range of motion has become the default recommendation for both goals at once. A deep squat, a full-range Romanian deadlift, an overhead press taken all the way up, a row taken all the way back — these build strength and range simultaneously and produce range you can actually use. Training a movement through its full range is closer to a mobility programme than most mobility programmes are.
What is fair to say about the popular framing: mobility work is genuinely useful when there is a specific position you need and cannot currently get into. It is oversold when it is presented as general maintenance that everybody must do daily, or when a routine of twenty drills is recommended to somebody whose actual problem is that they do not do any resistance training.
Foam rolling and the rest of the recovery aisle
Rolling a muscle over a foam cylinder produces a short-lived increase in range of motion, generally without the temporary force reduction that a long static stretch causes, which makes it a defensible addition to a warm-up. It also feels good to a lot of people, which is a legitimate reason to do it.
What it does not do is break up scar tissue, release fascia in any structural sense, or lengthen a muscle. Those explanations are mechanically implausible at the pressures a person can generate lying on a cylinder, and the range-of-motion effect is short-lived and most likely neural. Evidence that rolling meaningfully reduces next-day soreness is weak and inconsistent. Treat it as pleasant and mildly useful — the honest position for most of the recovery category.
The same applies to the broader aisle. Massage guns, stretching straps, compression sleeves and mobility apps are not frauds and they are not the thing that decides whether your training works. Sleep and total food intake are much larger levers and cost nothing to prioritise; sleep hygiene is a better investment of an hour than anything with a battery in it.
When restriction is not a flexibility problem
Not every limited or uncomfortable range responds to stretching, and some should not be stretched at all until somebody has looked at it. A joint that catches, locks or gives way, a range that is limited by pain rather than by tightness, a sudden loss of range after an incident, restriction on one side only that appeared without explanation, or any numbness or tingling that a stretch provokes — those are reasons to see a physical therapist or physician rather than reasons to stretch harder. The same goes for anybody returning from an injury or working around a diagnosed condition, where what is appropriate is specific to you and to the tissue involved, and a physical therapist can determine in one appointment what a page cannot infer at all.
The question this page started with was whether to stretch before exercising, and the useful answer is that it was the wrong question. Warm up, rehearse the movement, train, and put flexibility work where it belongs — in its own slot, treated as training, with a timeline measured in weeks. Should I stretch before I work out?
Not statically. After that: strength training through a full range of motion, adequate sleep, and enough total food to support what you are asking your body to do. Structured programmes combining strength, balance and movement drills have reduced injury rates in team-sport trials, and the strength and neuromuscular components appear to be doing the work rather than the stretching.
Does foam rolling break up scar tissue or release fascia?
No. Those explanations are not mechanically plausible at the pressures a person can generate lying on a foam cylinder, and connective tissue does not restructure under that kind of load. What rolling does produce is a short-lived increase in range of motion, most likely through a nervous-system effect, without the temporary force reduction a long static stretch causes. That makes it a reasonable warm-up addition. Evidence that it meaningfully reduces next-day soreness is weak. It feels good, which is a fine reason to do it.
One side is much tighter than the other. Should I stretch it more?
Not before finding out why. A restriction that appeared on one side without explanation, a range limited by pain rather than by a stretch sensation, a joint that catches or gives way, or a stretch that produces numbness or tingling are all reasons to see a physical therapist rather than to apply more stretching. Asymmetry is extremely common and often means nothing, but the cases where it matters are the cases where stretching harder is exactly the wrong response, and a clinician can sort those out in one appointment.
