Carrying them costs about two pounds and takes up the bottom of the pack. The point is not that you expect to use them. It is that a twisted ankle three miles from a trailhead at four in the afternoon becomes a very different night depending on whether you have a headlamp, a jacket and a bivy.
Cotton, and the clothing that keeps working when wet
The phrase people repeat is that cotton kills, and it is worth understanding rather than chanting. Cotton absorbs many times its weight in water, holds it against the skin, and loses essentially all of its insulating value when wet. In warm dry conditions this is harmless and even pleasant. In cold conditions, or in wind, or when a summer thunderstorm soaks you on an exposed ridge, a wet cotton shirt actively pulls heat out of you faster than being bare would. Hypothermia in fifty-degree wet weather is more common than people expect.
Wool and synthetics do not do this. They hold much less water, they keep some loft when damp, and they dry while you wear them. The practical version is three layers: something synthetic or wool against the skin, something insulating like fleece or a light puffy, and a wind and rain shell over the top. Add and shed layers as you climb rather than sweating through everything and then freezing at the summit — being soaked in your own sweat is the same physics as being soaked by rain.

Water, food and pacing
A rough starting point is about half a liter of water per hour of moderate hiking, more in heat, at altitude, or when climbing hard. Two things about water are worth internalizing. Thirst lags behind need, so drinking on a schedule beats drinking on demand. And in heat, sustained sweating means losing salt as well as water, which is why food during the day matters and why plain water alone through a long hot day can leave someone feeling worse rather than better. For food, bring more than the day needs and prefer things you will actually eat when tired.
On pacing: a sustainable pace on a climb is one where you can still speak in full sentences. If you cannot, you are spending energy you will want on the way down. Take short frequent stops rather than long collapses, and eat something at each of them rather than waiting to feel empty.
Why the descent is the dangerous half
Ask anyone who works trail rescue and they will tell you that most injuries happen going down. There are three reasons and they compound. Your legs are tired, and it is the eccentric loading of downhill steps that fatigues them fastest. The braking forces on a knee going downhill are considerably higher than the forces going up. And psychologically the summit feels like the end of the trip, so attention drops exactly when footing demands more of it.
What helps: budget more time for the descent than beginners expect, roughly two-thirds to three-quarters of the ascent time rather than half. Shorten your stride and keep your feet under you rather than reaching downhill. Trekking poles genuinely reduce load on knees and give you two more points of contact on loose ground. Tighten boot laces over the instep before descending so your toes are not driven into the front of the boot, which is what produces bruised toenails and, more importantly, a change in gait that leads to a fall.
The turnaround time and the plan you leave behind
Set a turnaround time before you start walking — an actual clock time at which you head down regardless of how close the summit looks. The summit will still be there. This single habit prevents most of the epics that begin with a headlamp-less party descending in the dark. Work backward from sunset with a margin of at least an hour, and remember that in a canyon or on the east side of a ridge, functional darkness arrives well before the official sunset time.
Then leave a plan with someone who is not coming: which trailhead, which route, who is with you, what car you are in, and — the part people skip — what time they should start making calls if they have not heard from you. A search that starts with a specific trailhead and a route is a fundamentally different operation from one that starts with somewhere in the national forest. Do not assume your phone will bridge the gap; most backcountry in the United States has no cell coverage at all, and a satellite messenger is the only reliable way to signal from a valley bottom. If you hike alone, the plan matters more, not less, and a solo hiker should pick busier trails until the habit is thoroughly ingrained.
Turning back is the skill nobody advertises. Weather building, a partner moving slower than expected, a trail that turns out to be snow-covered above a certain elevation — each is a reason to go home, and the hikers who have been at it longest are the ones most willing to do it without argument.
