The calculation, and why it is measured the way it is

Density is gross weight divided by volume in cubic feet. Volume is length times width times height in inches divided by 1,728, and every one of those three dimensions is taken to the extreme point of the handling unit. That means the pallet is in the height. It means a carton that hangs an inch past the deck makes the whole unit two inches longer, because it is measured on both sides. It means wrap, corner boards, banding and a domed top layer all count.

People consistently measure the pallet rather than the load. A 48 by 40 pallet with cartons overhanging half an inch each way is a 49 by 41 footprint, which is four percent more cube for nothing, and at a band edge that four percent is the whole argument. Measure the thing that will sit on the dock, not the thing you ordered.

Gross weight means everything that moves: product, packaging, pallet, slip sheet, wrap. The pallet alone is commonly tens of pounds and it is not optional to include it.

Density is one factor of four

This is the part that a density calculator cannot do for you, and the part that costs money when it is misunderstood. Classification systems look at four characteristics of a commodity, not one.

A commodity can be dense and still classify high because it is fragile, valuable, or awkward to stow. The density band this tool reports is an indication of where one of the four factors sits. It is not your class, and it should not be written on a bill of lading on the strength of this page. The classification that governs is the one your carrier applies under the governing classification document, and that is a conversation to have before the freight moves rather than after.

What a reclassification actually costs

Freight that is tendered under one description and found to be something else gets corrected. The correction is not a warning. It is a re-rated invoice, usually with an inspection or correction charge on top, arriving weeks after the shipment delivered and after you have already invoiced your own customer at the old number. Repeat it across a lane and it becomes a recurring line item that nobody budgeted.

The defence is boring and it works: measure the actual handling unit including overhang, weigh it including the pallet, describe the commodity the way the classification describes it rather than the way your catalogue does, and check with the carrier when anything about the product or its packaging changes. Packaging changes are the usual trigger, because a lighter carton or a taller pallet moves density without anyone thinking of it as a freight decision.

Working the density deliberately

Because density is weight over cube, there are only two levers, and the calculator shows both. At a fixed weight you can reduce cube, usually by stacking tighter or building a shorter pallet. At a fixed cube you can add weight, which sounds absurd until you consider that consolidating two half pallets into one full one does exactly that and often costs less to ship than the two did.

The figures in the "how close to the edge" section tell you how far you are from the next band in each direction, in the units you can act on. If you are two hundred pounds and one band away, consolidation is worth modelling. If you are nowhere near an edge, packaging changes will not move the classification and the effort belongs elsewhere. Either way, confirm the outcome with the carrier before you rely on it. Questions people ask

Is the class number this shows the class I should put on my bill of lading?

No. It is the label commonly attached to the density band your figure falls in, shown so you can see where you sit on the scale, and it is an indication only. Density is one of four classification factors and the other three can move a commodity somewhere else entirely. The class that governs your shipment is the one the carrier applies under the governing classification, and the bill of lading is the document that controls. Ask the carrier, in advance, for the class they will apply to your commodity as you have described and packaged it.

Do I include the pallet in the weight and the height?

Yes, both. The handling unit is what physically moves, and that includes the pallet under it, the wrap around it and anything else that goes on the truck. Height is floor to the top of the load. Weight is what the whole assembled unit reads on a scale. The two selects at the top of the form let you enter product-only figures and have the pallet added, which is useful because product weight is usually what your system knows and pallet weight is not.

Why does an inch of overhang matter so much?

Because it applies to both sides of both dimensions and it multiplies. A 48 by 40 by 55 unit is 61.1 cubic feet. Add one inch of overhang per side and it becomes 50 by 42 by 55, which is 66.8 cubic feet, nine percent more. At a fixed weight that is a nine percent drop in density, which is enough to cross a band edge if you were sitting near one. It also tends to be invisible, because everyone quotes the pallet size rather than the load size.

My shipment has pallets of different sizes. How do I handle that?

Run them separately. Averaging unlike handling units gives a density that does not describe any of them, and carriers assess pieces as they find them rather than as an average of the shipment. Work out each distinct unit here, note each one, and give the carrier the actual dimensions and weights piece by piece. If the shipment is mostly one type with a couple of odd pieces, the odd pieces are usually the ones that generate a correction.

What if my freight might be hazardous material?

Then stop and take it to the carrier before doing anything else. Regulated materials are a separate regime with their own classification, packaging, marking, labelling, documentation and training requirements, and none of it is decided by density or by any calculator. Nothing on this page addresses it and nothing on this page should be used as a substitute for it. If there is any chance the commodity is regulated, that question comes first and everything else follows from the answer.
