The average is the part that lies
Run the defaults. Eight teams, two practices a week of an hour and a half, so 24 practice hours. One game a week each at two hours, half of them away, so 8 game hours. That is 32 hours a week, and over a fourteen week season, 448 playing hours.
Spread over 64,350 square feet, 448 hours is 6.96 hours per thousand square feet. That sounds mild. But if 45 percent of the play lands on 10 percent of the ground — the goal mouths, the centre, the touchline where every coach stands — then 201.6 hours are falling on 6,435 square feet, which is 31.33 hours per thousand. That is 4.5 times the field average, and it is exactly the ground that everybody looks at when they judge whether the field is any good.

The useful thing about putting numbers on that is what it implies about remedies. Nothing on a maintenance schedule reduces the 448 hours. What can move is where they land — shifting the goals along the goal line between seasons, rotating small-sided layouts around the space, moving practice grids, keeping warm-ups off the mouths. Every one of those is a way of turning 31.33 back towards 6.96 without cancelling a single session.
Capacity is your number, not a published one
There is no universal figure for how many hours a field can take. It moves with grass species, soil type, drainage, whether there is irrigation, how long the growing season is, how much of the schedule falls in wet months, and above all what the renovation budget can repair each year. A sand-based field with drainage and a full renovation programme carries a multiple of what a native soil field with neither can.
So capacity is a field on this page. Your turf manager or agronomist sets it, and the arithmetic here tells you where the schedule stands against it. On the defaults, 448 hours against a 300 hour capacity is 149 percent, the capacity is reached at 9.4 weeks of a 14 week season, and carrying the schedule inside that figure would take two fields, or 21.4 hours a week instead of 32.
Counting the hours honestly
Two errors dominate. The first is counting a game once per team when both teams are in the same schedule, which doubles the game hours. The selector for home and away is the crude fix: setting half the games away halves the game hours, which is right when teams in the group play each other. The second is counting the whistle rather than the occupancy — a two hour slot is two hours of field time even if the game is eighty minutes, because warm-up and changeover are on the grass too.
Bookable hours are worth entering as well. A schedule that needs more hours a week than the daylight, the lighting and the staffing allow is a scheduling problem before it is a turf problem, and the utilisation percentage puts a number on how close to the ceiling the season is running.
Cost per playing hour
If you put the season maintenance budget in, the page divides it by the hours. It is a blunt figure and it excludes capital, but it is the one number that makes a field comparison legible to somebody outside the grounds department. A field carrying 448 hours on a given budget and one carrying 200 on the same budget are not equally expensive, whatever the line item says.
What this does not tell you
It does not say whether a field is safe to play on, whether the surface is fit for a given level of play, or whether a schedule should be cut. Playing surface condition is judged on the ground by people qualified to judge it, on the day, and no arithmetic about hours substitutes for that. It also does not prescribe a maintenance programme, a fertility rate or a renovation schedule — those come from a soil test, from your extension service and from a turf professional who has seen the site.
Before anything goes into the ground
Irrigation mains, drainage, electrical runs to scoreboards and lighting, and old utility crossings all live under sports fields, frequently at shallow depths and frequently not where the as-built drawing says. Call 811 before you dig, trench, drive a stake, auger a post or set an anchor, and give the locate time to be marked. Private lines on the facility side of the meter are usually not covered by the public locate service, which is what catches out a crew that did everything else right.
Open fields are also the place people get hurt by heat and by machinery. A groundskeeper on a mower or an aerator in July is exposed on both counts at once, and neither risk announces itself.
