Calories are the unit; meals are not

Almost every food store gets planned in meals, and almost every one comes out wrong, because a meal has no fixed size. Three meals a day for four people for two weeks is 168 meals, a number that tells you nothing about how much to buy or where it will go. Calories are additive, they are printed on the packaging, and they convert cleanly into weight and volume once you know what the food is.

The arithmetic runs in one direction. Household size and a per-person daily figure give calories per day. Multiply by days for the total. Split that total across the kinds of food you actually intend to store, and each kind converts to pounds through its calories per pound and to cubic feet through its bulk density. The default here is 2,000 calories per adult per day, which is a planning convention rather than a nutritional prescription, and it is an editable field because cold weather, physical work and who is in the household all move it.

Children are handled with a proportion rather than their own figure, and that proportion is crude on purpose. A four-year-old and a fifteen-year-old are not the same planning problem, and a teenager will out-eat most adults. If your household skews one way, change the percentage rather than trusting the default.

Why the mix decides the size of the store

Foods differ enormously in calories per pound, and that single spread governs how large a two-week store is.

The figures above are approximations for planning; read the actual labels for the actual products, which is why the calculator takes calories per pound as an input rather than assuming it. The pattern, though, is stable: anything packed in water is mostly water, and canned goods buy convenience and variety at a large cost in weight and shelf. That is not an argument against them. It is an argument for knowing which part of the store is doing the calorie work and which part is doing the eating-it-willingly work, and for not being surprised when a modest calorie target turns into a hundred pounds of shelf load.

Volume follows a different curve from weight. Pasta is light and bulky; canned goods are heavy and comparatively compact; oil is heavy and dense. A store optimised only for weight ends up unreasonably bulky, and one optimised only for volume ends up unreasonably heavy. Shelf space, and the packing efficiency nobody allows for

Cubic feet of food is not cubic feet of shelf. Tins are cylinders, boxes are the wrong shape, bags slump, and a shelf that is 12 inches between decks cannot hold a 13 inch box no matter how much volume is technically free. The default packing efficiency here is 70 percent, which is reasonable for tins and boxes on an open shelf and generous for anything in awkward packaging.

The output that matters more than the shelf count is the weight per shelf. A two-week store for four people runs to something like a hundred pounds, and a fortnight is a modest target. Rotation is the part that fails quietly

Every store degrades on a schedule, and the schedule differs by item. Oils and anything with fat in it turn over fastest. Bars and packaged snacks carry short dates. Rice, dried beans and most canned goods run long. The calculator counts each line forward from a purchase date and tells you which item comes due first, because that is the date the whole store has to be visited by, not the average one.

The mechanism that works is not a spreadsheet. It is storing food the household already eats and cooking from the store, so it turns over as part of ordinary life and gets replaced on the ordinary shopping run. Stores built from things nobody in the house likes are the ones found unopened and expired three years later. Attach a twice-yearly check to a date already on the calendar, the same hook the family emergency plan uses for the rest of the kit, and use it to walk the shelves rather than to read a list.

One practical dependency: a store of canned food and no working can opener is not a store. The same goes for anything that needs cooking during an outage. What food should actually go in the store?

Things the household already eats, that keep, and that need no cooking or minimal cooking, in that order of importance. The calorie total can be met a dozen ways and most of them fail on the second week for reasons that have nothing to do with arithmetic. Include a manual can opener, something for the people who will not eat unfamiliar food, and pet food if there are animals. Dietary restrictions, allergies, infant formula and anything medically prescribed are decided by the people concerned and their clinicians, not by a default mix on a page.
