The gate is not the constraint, the queue is
Ask how far back a gate should sit and the honest answer is: far enough that the longest thing which regularly arrives stands entirely clear of the road while the gate does whatever it does. That is a length problem, and it adds up faster than people expect. A pickup is about twenty feet. Add a sixteen foot trailer and three feet of hitch and you are at thirty nine feet before the gate has moved an inch. If a swing gate reaches back down the driveway as it opens, that comes off the same depth.
The number that turns this from awkward into serious is time. A manually opened gate means the driver gets out, walks forward, opens it, walks back — a minute or more with the vehicle stationary and part of it possibly in a traffic lane. An automatic gate is faster but not instant, and it still leaves the vehicle standing while it cycles. Multiply by every arrival, every day, for years.
Deliveries are the case that breaks the layout
Households size their entrance around their own vehicles and then discover that the parcel truck, the propane truck, the septic pumper and the gravel delivery are all longer, and that some of them arrive weekly. A driveway that fits your pickup with four feet to spare puts a box truck into the road. It is worth entering the longest vehicle that has ever come up your driveway rather than the one in your garage, and running it a second time with a trailer even if you do not own one, because the day you borrow one is the day it matters.

These are planning figures to get you started, not specifications. Measure the vehicle you actually care about; two pickups of the same class differ by a couple of feet and a trailer tongue adds more than people guess.
Widening instead of lengthening
Where the depth simply is not available, the alternative is width. A pull-off wide enough for a second vehicle to sit alongside rather than behind means a queue of two does not become a queue of two lengths. It also gives a place for a delivery driver to stop out of the road while they work out that they need a code. Width is often cheaper than depth at an entrance, because depth may mean moving the gate and everything attached to it, while width is grading and stone.

Ask for the density rather than assuming one — it varies by product and by how wet it is when it is weighed. The part this page cannot do
Nothing here is a sight distance check. Whether a driver waiting at your gate can see far enough along the road in each direction to pull out, and how much clear distance the road authority requires at an entrance on that road at that speed, is a question for the authority and it is specific to your entrance. Two driveways a hundred yards apart on the same road can have completely different answers because of a bend or a crest.
The strip between the travelled road and your property line usually is not yours. Whether a gate, a pillar, a post or a culvert may sit there at all, how far back from the pavement edge it has to be, what sight lines have to stay open, whether the entrance needs a permit or an encroachment approval, and who is liable for what afterwards are decided by the road authority — a city or county public works department, a state highway department, or a homeowners association on a private road — and they differ between adjacent jurisdictions. Ask them before anything is built. A gate or a column standing where a vehicle can hit it is a hazard to the driver as well as to your wallet.
A powered gate is a machine. It moves a heavy leaf under motor power across ground where children, pets and people on foot are, and the ways it injures and kills are well documented: a person or a limb caught between a closing leaf and a post, a child riding or climbing a leaf, a hand in the path of a rolling gate at a roller post. How far back from the road should a driveway gate be?

For a single pickup with a few feet of margin behind it that lands in the low twenties of feet; add a trailer and it roughly doubles. The road authority for your entrance may set its own minimum, and where it does, theirs governs rather than this arithmetic.
Does a sliding gate need less setback than a swinging one?
It removes one term from the sum. A slide gate does not reach back down the driveway as it opens, so the intrusion figure is zero and the whole depth goes to the waiting vehicle. What if I only have twelve feet between the road and the gate?
Then a vehicle waits partly in the road every time, and that is worth knowing rather than discovering. The realistic options are moving the gate further in if the driveway allows it, widening so vehicles pull off sideways rather than queue, or setting the gate to open on approach so nothing stops at all — which is an operator question for an installer and carries its own safety considerations. Should I plan for more than one vehicle waiting?
Depends entirely on the household. Two vehicles arriving together, a slow gate that lets a second car catch the first, or a shared entrance for more than one property all push it up. Each extra rig adds its own length plus a gap, so the depth grows quickly. If two waiting rigs will not fit end to end, the useful question is whether they can fit side by side instead.
Does this tell me whether the entrance is safe?
No. It is a length calculation and nothing more. Whether a driver can see far enough along the road to pull out, whether the entrance meets whatever the road authority requires, whether the gate may stand where you want it, and whether a powered gate installation is set up correctly are all outside it. Sight distance in particular is specific to your entrance, the road speed and the geometry either side, and only the road authority can answer it.
