The side slopes are most of the pipe

People order a culvert by measuring the driveway and adding a foot. Then the pipe arrives and it is short, because the driveway is not sitting on the ground — it is sitting on a small embankment, and the embankment has two faces that fall away to the ditch. Each of those faces takes horizontal distance, and the amount is the height of the fill times the slope ratio.

Work it through. An eighteen inch pipe with a foot of cover is two and a half feet from invert to driving surface. At two to one, each face uses five feet horizontally. Two faces is ten feet, add the twelve foot driveway on top and a foot of pipe past daylight at each end, and the barrel is twenty four feet — twice the driveway width. Flatten the slopes to three to one, which is easier to mow and far more forgiving if a vehicle leaves the driveway, and it goes to twenty nine.

What this page does not decide

Two figures dominate a culvert and neither of them is here. The first is pipe size, which is a hydraulics question — how much water arrives in the design storm, and what the road authority requires at an entrance on that road. The second is minimum cover: how much fill has to sit over the pipe before vehicles drive across it. That depends on the pipe product, its class, and the loads crossing it, and it is a manufacturer and road authority figure. Getting it wrong deforms or cracks a pipe under the first loaded truck, and the pipe is under the driveway by then. Settle it before the trench is dug, because the answer sometimes changes which pipe you buy.

The bedding is what actually holds it up

A flexible pipe carries load mostly by pushing sideways into the material packed around it, which means the stone at the haunches — the awkward zone under the curve on each side — is doing structural work. It is also the zone that is hardest to compact and the one that gets skipped. A culvert that settles usually settles because that material was never properly placed, not because the pipe was too light.

The take-off here reflects that: bedding under the pipe across the full trench width, then the material around and over it, which is the trench cross-section less the circle the barrel occupies. The bedding depth, the material and how it is compacted are the pipe manufacturer's instructions and the road authority's specification.

Joints and ends

Every joint between pipe sections is a place water can get out and start washing bedding away from underneath. That is how a culvert quietly undermines a driveway: the void forms below the pipe where nobody can see it, and the surface above finally drops into it years later. Bands and the way they are installed are a manufacturer detail, and it is one worth following exactly.

At the ends, flared sections make the inlet and outlet work better hydraulically and keep the ends from being knocked about, and stone aprons at each end take the energy out of water leaving the pipe so it does not dig a hole at the outlet. Both are optional in the arithmetic here and often not optional in what the road authority will accept.

Before anything is dug

Before anything is dug at an entrance, have the underground utilities located. Call 811 or use the online locate request; it is free everywhere in the United States and the locate is the whole point of the service. Entrances are the single worst place to guess, because water, gas, electric, telecoms, irrigation and the neighbour's unrecorded conduit all converge in that strip and shallow cover is common. Overhead lines matter too: a post, a pillar or a length of pipe swung up on end near a service drop is a fatal accident that happens every year. A trench deep enough for a large pipe is deep enough to bury someone. Trench collapse is fast, silent and usually fatal, and the depth at which it becomes a serious hazard is shallower than most people assume. Whether a gate, a pillar, a post or a culvert may sit there at all, how far back from the pavement edge it has to be, what sight lines have to stay open, whether the entrance needs a permit or an encroachment approval, and who is liable for what afterwards are decided by the road authority — a city or county public works department, a state highway department, or a homeowners association on a private road — and they differ between adjacent jurisdictions. Ask them before anything is built. A gate or a column standing where a vehicle can hit it is a hazard to the driver as well as to your wallet.
