The comparison rests on one number and it is not the dishwasher
A dishwasher uses a known, fixed quantity of water per cycle, and it is printed on the specification sheet. Hand washing uses whatever the tap delivers for as long as it is open, which is not a specification, it is a habit. That asymmetry is the whole subject. The machine cannot use more than its cycle allows. The sink can use any amount at all.
Work the arithmetic in the direction that makes it obvious. A kitchen tap commonly flows somewhere between 1.5 and 2.2 gallons a minute. A modern dishwasher cycle commonly uses somewhere around three to five gallons. Divide one by the other and the entire water budget of the machine is spent in about two minutes of running tap. Nobody washes a full load of dishes in two minutes of running water. That is the result, and no amount of care at the sink changes the ratio by much as long as the tap is open the whole time.
The comparison flips only when the sink stops being a running tap. Two basins, one to wash and one to rinse, is a fixed-volume method just as the machine is, and a careful two-basin wash of eight gallons total is genuinely comparable and can beat an older or larger machine. Water is cheap, hot water is not
The gallons are the headline, but for most households the money is in the temperature. Raising a gallon of water from 55 degrees to 120 takes about 542 Btu, because a gallon weighs 8.34 pounds and a Btu raises a pound by one degree. Divide by 3,412 and that is about 0.16 kWh of energy in the water itself, before the heater's own losses. Twenty gallons of hot water for a hand wash is over three kilowatt-hours once a real heater efficiency is applied, and that is a larger number than most dishwashers use for the whole cycle.

Those are the figures before the heater. A storage water heater loses heat to the room around the clock whether you draw from it or not, so the energy you pay for per useful gallon is higher than the energy that arrives in the sink. The pre-rinse, which undoes everything
The most common way to make a dishwasher lose this comparison is to rinse everything under a running tap before loading it. Three minutes of tap at two gallons a minute is six gallons, which is more than the machine will use for the entire cycle, and it is spent before the machine has done anything. Scraping solids into the bin with a spatula achieves the same result at no water cost.
There is a mechanical argument against pre-rinsing as well. Detergents are formulated to act on food residue, and a load of already-clean dishes gives them nothing to work on, which in some machines leaves detergent film behind. Some machines also use a turbidity sensor on the first fill to decide how long and how hot the cycle needs to be, and presenting it with clean water can shorten a cycle that then does not clean the things you did not rinse. Scrape, do not rinse, and let the machine do the work it was sold to do.
What this page deliberately leaves out
Three things are absent and each of them could move the answer. The first is the machine itself: a dishwasher costs money to buy, occupies a cabinet bay, and eventually needs replacing, and none of that appears in a per-load water and energy comparison. Questions people ask
Does a dishwasher really use less water than washing by hand?
Against a running tap, comfortably, and it is not close. A modern cycle in the three to five gallon range is equalled by roughly two minutes of a typical kitchen tap, and a full load by hand takes far longer than that with the water running. Against a disciplined two-basin wash the gap narrows and can reverse, particularly with an older or larger machine. The variable that decides it is not the machine, it is whether the tap runs continuously, which is why this calculator makes you choose between the two hand-washing methods rather than assuming one.
Should I run the dishwasher half full?
A dishwasher uses close to the same water and energy whether it is half loaded or packed, because the fill volume is set by the cycle rather than by the contents. So the cost per load is fixed and the cost per dish halves when you fill it. Running it full is the efficient choice. The qualification is that waiting several days for a full load leaves food residue to dry hard onto plates, which then need a longer, hotter cycle or a scrub. Is the hot water or the machine using more of the energy?
For a machine plumbed to the hot line it is usually close, and for hand washing it is essentially all water heating. That is the useful insight here: the dishwasher argument is mostly a hot water argument wearing an appliance costume. If your machine is on the cold supply and heats internally, the same energy is being spent, just billed as machine electricity instead. Anything that reduces the temperature rise — a lower thermostat setting, warmer incoming water in summer, less hot water at the sink — moves both sides of the comparison at once.
Why does the calculator ask for my water rate separately from electricity?
Because water and sewer are often the smaller half of the water story and people leave them out. Most utilities bill sewer volume on your metered water regardless of where the water actually went, so a gallon down the kitchen drain is charged twice. Getting your true all-in figure means dividing the whole bill, fixed charges included, by the gallons on it. What about the water used to make the dishes clean enough to load?
It counts, and it is left to you to include it in the running-tap minutes if you pre-rinse. Realistically, if you are timing your hand-washing minutes honestly you should also be timing your pre-rinse minutes and adding them to the dishwasher side. Most people who do that discover the pre-rinse is a substantial share of their total kitchen water. The fix is to stop pre-rinsing rather than to account for it more carefully.
