Consumed cost and cash outlay

Run the defaults and the batch of forty consumes about $141.58 of material while forcing you to buy $182.00 of packs. The $40.42 difference is 3.2 pounds of wax, 10 ounces of fragrance, 8 jars and 60 wicks sitting on a shelf.

Both numbers are real and they answer different questions. If you are setting a price, the consumed figure is the right one, because the leftovers are not gone — they go into the next batch and reduce what it has to buy. If you are deciding whether to run the batch at all this month, the outlay is the right one, because that is what leaves your account on Tuesday.

The failure mode is using the consumed figure for both. A maker prices correctly, sells everything, and still cannot afford the next run, because every batch has been quietly buying inventory that the price only partly covers. It resolves itself once the shelf stabilises, which can take several batches and is very uncomfortable while it is happening.

Which material stops you

The results include the number of whole units each pack yields, and the smallest of those figures is the item that will run out first. It is almost never the most expensive one. In the default set the jars yield twelve units a pack while the wicks yield a hundred, so across the same run of candles you order jar packs more than eight times as often as wick packs, and the jars are not the biggest line on the invoice.

Rounding down, deliberately

Ten pounds of wax at 0.42 pounds per candle is 23.8 candles, and the page reports 23. There is no twenty-fourth candle in that pack, only eight tenths of one, and a partly filled jar is not a product. Every yield figure here rounds down for the same reason.

The pack counts round the other way. Needing 16.8 pounds means buying two ten pound bags, not 1.68 of them, and that rounding is where the leftover value comes from. Both roundings are in the same direction as reality and they are the entire reason the two per-unit figures differ.

What belongs in a per-unit row and what does not

Only things that scale with the number of units. A jar per candle, a wick per candle, a fixed weight of wax per candle: those are rows. The pouring pitcher you bought once is not, the rent is not, and the thirty minutes spent setting up and cleaning down is not, which is why the labour field asks specifically for hands-on minutes per unit.

Setup time is real and it has to be paid for, but spreading it over units is a different calculation that depends on batch size, and folding it into a per-unit rate hides that dependence. Questions people ask

What is the difference between the two per-unit costs?

One counts what a unit consumes and the other counts what the packs cost you. If a unit uses 0.42 pounds of a 10 pound bag, it consumes 4.2 percent of the bag price, and that is the cost figure. But you cannot buy 4.2 percent of a bag, so a batch of forty buys twenty pounds and the extra 3.2 sits on the shelf. Price on the consumed figure, because the leftover will get used. Plan your cash on the outlay figure, because that is what you actually pay this week.

Should I put my own labour in?

Put it in if you want to know whether the work pays, and leave the rate at zero if you only want materials. The field asks for hands-on minutes per unit rather than total time on purpose: setup and cleanup do not scale with units, so folding them into a per-unit rate hides the fact that a batch of eighty carries them just as well as a batch of twenty. A rate you would accept from someone else doing the same work is the usual way to pick a number.

Why does a pack of ten pounds only yield 23 units at 0.42 each?

Does this tell me what to charge?

No, and it would be doing you a disservice if it tried. Price involves overhead, marketplace fees, shipping, packaging beyond the per-unit row, and what the work is actually worth to a buyer, none of which are on this page. What you get here is a floor. Any price at or below the per-unit cost is losing money on every sale, and the amount by which a price clears that floor is what has to cover everything else.

Can I mix units between rows?

Yes, and you should. Each row is self-contained: the pack size, the amount used per unit and the label all describe the same material in whatever measure suits it. Wax in pounds, fragrance in ounces, jars in each, ribbon in yards. Nothing is converted between rows and nothing needs to be, because every row produces a cost in dollars and it is only the dollars that get added up.
