Two jobs, two numbers

Ice absorbs heat in two ways, and only one of them is what most people picture. Melting a kilogram of ice at 0 °C absorbs about 334 kilojoules without the temperature moving at all — that is the heat of fusion, and it is where nearly all the capacity of a cooler comes from. Once melted, the water can absorb a little more as it warms up to the holding temperature, about 4.19 kilojoules per kilogram per degree, which for a cooler held near 36 °F adds under three percent. Rounding it out changes nothing.

Against that, the chill-down job is straightforward arithmetic. Thirty-five pounds of mixed groceries at 72 °F, brought to 36 °F, is 15.9 kilograms dropping 20 kelvin. At around 3.6 kilojoules per kilogram per kelvin that is roughly 1,140 kilojoules, which melts about 3.3 kilograms of ice, or seven and a third pounds. That happens on the first afternoon and then it is done.

Why pre-chilling is the cheapest thing you can do

Those seven pounds are pure waste. They buy no cold time at all — they simply undo the fact that the groceries were warm when they went in. Put the same load in a refrigerator overnight and it arrives at the cooler already at 38 °F, the chill-down cost collapses to nearly nothing, and every pound of ice you bring goes into fighting the walls instead.

The cooler itself is worth the same treatment. A warm empty cooler has plastic and foam that have to come down in temperature too, and the sacrificial bag of ice that does that at home costs a couple of dollars and never has to be carried anywhere.

None of that is knowable from a product page. Measuring it is easy: put a known weight of ice in the cooler, leave it somewhere like the trip, and weigh what is left after 24 hours. That single number, in the field on this page, is worth more than any published claim about how many days a cooler keeps ice, because those claims are made with a full box of pre-chilled contents and an unopened lid.

Volume, not just weight

Solid water ice weighs about 57 pounds a cubic foot, and a cubic foot is just under 30 quarts. Bagged cubes fill perhaps 60 percent of the space they occupy, so 20 pounds of cubes takes up roughly 17 quarts of a cooler rather than the 10 the solid volume would suggest. Block ice packs far closer to solid and takes about 12. On a 50 quart cooler that difference is the space for a day of food, which is why the block-versus-cube decision is a packing decision as much as a melting one.

How much ice do I need for a cooler?

It splits into two parts. The chill-down part depends on how warm the contents are: cooling 35 pounds of mixed groceries from room temperature to fridge temperature takes roughly seven pounds of ice, and none if you chilled everything beforehand. The holding part is your cooler losing ice through its walls, day after day, and only measuring your own cooler tells you that rate. Add the two and you have the answer for your trip rather than for somebody else's.

What is the right ice to food ratio?

The commonly quoted two-to-one by volume is a packing rule rather than a physics one, and it is a reasonable starting point for a warm load over a long weekend. The reason it is quoted so loosely is that it is doing two jobs at once — chilling and holding — whose sizes depend on completely different things. Working them separately, as this page does, produces a ratio for your cooler and your trip that may be well above or well below two to one.

Is block ice better than cubes?

For lasting, yes, by a wide margin: a block has far less surface area per pound, so it absorbs heat more slowly. For chilling a warm load quickly, cubes win for exactly the same reason in reverse — they make contact with everything. Blocks also pack closer to solid, so they take up less of the cooler for the same weight. Many people use both deliberately, with a block on the bottom for the week and cubes among the drinks for the first day.

Should I drain the water out of my cooler?

It is genuinely contested and the honest answer is that it depends on the cooler and how you use it. Cold melt water is useful thermal mass and keeps the contents cold even after the ice is gone; it also conducts heat far better than air, so it warms the remaining ice faster than trapped air would. Anything that floats gets wet, which for cardboard packaging settles the question on its own. The way to resolve it is to test it once on your own cooler, since the effect size is small either way compared with sun and lid openings.

How long will ice last in a cooler?

That question has no general answer, which is why this page asks you to supply the melt rate rather than claiming one. The same cooler with the same ice will hold for three days in the shade with a full load and an unopened lid, and for one in a hot car with people getting drinks out of it all afternoon. Manufacturer ice-retention claims are measured under conditions that are stated somewhere in the fine print and are almost never the conditions of a real trip.
