Why the per-bird figure is the whole calculation

Everything on this page is one number multiplied by the flock size, so the number you choose matters more than the arithmetic. Published guidance clusters around 2 to 3 square feet of coop floor per standard bird where the flock ranges outdoors all day and uses the coop only to sleep and lay, and 4 or more square feet where birds are confined for long stretches. The run figure is usually quoted at 8 to 10 square feet per bird as a floor for a permanent run. Bantams need less, heavy breeds need more, and climate shifts it further: a flock in a place with three weeks of ice underfoot is a confined flock whatever you intended when you built.

These are welfare guidance rather than engineering limits, which means they behave differently from a beam span. Nothing collapses at 3.9 square feet. What happens instead is gradual and easy to misread — birds start picking at each other, the lowest hen in the order stops getting to the feeder, bedding stays damp because there is more manure per square foot than the litter can absorb, and then somebody sells the flock and says chickens are dirty. Choose the generous end of the range and the calculation stops being interesting, which is the point.

Roost, boxes, feeder

Roost length is the one people underbuild most often, because a flock will crowd onto one bar in cold weather and look content doing it. They also need to be able to spread out in July. Around 8 inches of bar per light bird and 10 to 12 for heavy breeds is the usual guidance, measured as total bar length rather than per bar, so three 4-foot bars serve the same as one 12-foot bar. Bars go higher than the nest boxes, or the birds sleep in the boxes and you spend every morning cleaning eggs.

Nest boxes run at one per three to five laying hens and the calculator rounds up, never down to zero. Adding boxes past that does very little, because hens queue for whichever box is currently fashionable regardless of how many empty ones sit beside it.

Feeder and waterer space is counted as linear inches of trough edge that a bird can stand at. A two-sided hanging feeder gives you its full circumference. The reason to count it at all is that feed access is where a pecking order does its real damage, and a single small feeder in a flock of fifteen means the bottom two birds eat what is left.

Ventilation is not a draft

The default here is a permanent opening equal to 10 percent of the floor area, which is a common planning figure rather than a code number. Birds put out a remarkable amount of moisture through respiration and manure, and a sealed coop in winter accumulates ammonia and damp that cause far more trouble than cold air does. The distinction that matters is height: openings above roosting height move air out without blowing across sleeping birds. Openings at bird level in winter are drafts, and those do cause harm.

Screen every opening with hardware cloth rather than poultry netting. Poultry netting keeps chickens in; it does not keep anything out, and most of what wants in can open it with one paw.

What sits outside this calculation

Predator proofing, which is the actual reason coops fail, does not come out of a square footage. Buried or skirted hardware cloth, a solid door latch that a raccoon cannot work, and a covered run are decisions about your particular predators. Anyone with local experience — a neighbour who keeps birds, the extension office, a poultry veterinarian — will know what visits your area, and that is worth more than any general figure.

The legal side is entirely local and changes at the town line. Bird count caps, whether roosters are permitted, setback distances from a dwelling or a property line, and in some places whether poultry are allowed at all are municipal questions, and a deed restriction or HOA covenant can override a permissive town ordinance. How many square feet per chicken do I actually need?

The figures you will see repeated are 2 to 3 square feet of coop floor per standard-size bird that ranges outside all day, 4 or more square feet where birds are confined, and 8 to 10 square feet of run per bird. Bantams need less and heavy breeds more. Treat all of those as planning starting points rather than as a minimum you can safely cut to, because they are welfare guidance and the failure mode is gradual rather than obvious. The practical test is whether a bird low in the pecking order can get away from a bird above it, reach feed and water without being blocked, and dust bathe. If your climate shuts the flock in for weeks at a time, build for that case rather than for the summer one.

Can I keep the run smaller if the birds free range?

Yes, and that is exactly what the lower end of the published ranges assumes. The problem is that free ranging is rarely as unlimited as planned. Hawk pressure, a neighbour's dog, a vegetable garden that needs protecting, snow, or simply nobody being home to open the pop door all turn a ranging flock into a confined flock without notice. Whatever run you build is the space they have on the worst week of the year. Two runs used alternately, so one rests and regrows while the other is in use, gets more out of a given area than one run twice the size, and it is the single change that keeps a run from becoming bare mud.

How many nest boxes for a dozen hens?

Three at one box per four hens, which is what this calculator returns. The common guidance range is one box per three to five laying hens and there is little to gain from exceeding it, because hens do not distribute themselves evenly across boxes. They develop a preference and queue for it, so you will regularly see two hens in one box and three empty ones. Count only laying hens; roosters and birds not yet in lay do not need boxes. If you are getting eggs on the coop floor, the fix is usually roost height above box height, or more light in the box area, rather than more boxes.

Is there a limit on how many chickens I can keep?

Very likely, and it is set locally rather than by any general rule. Municipalities commonly cap bird numbers, restrict or prohibit roosters, require the coop to sit a stated distance from property lines or from a neighbouring dwelling, and some prohibit poultry outright in certain zones. On top of that, a deed restriction or homeowners association covenant can forbid birds even where the town permits them. This varies far more between adjacent towns than people expect, and enforcement usually arrives as a complaint after the coop is built. Call the municipal zoning or code office and ask directly before you buy materials.

Does the ventilation opening make the coop cold?

A properly placed one does not, and a sealed coop is the more common mistake. Chickens carry their own insulation and tolerate cold far better than damp. What they do not tolerate is moisture and ammonia accumulating in still air, which is what a closed coop produces from respiration and manure over a winter night.
