Base weight is a bookkeeping definition, not a virtue: it is everything in and on the pack that you do not eat, drink or burn. The reason it gets its own name is that it is the only part of the load you can change by shopping. Food, fuel and water are set by how long you are out and how far apart the sources are, and on a five-day carry they routinely outweigh the entire gear list.

Three weights, and only one of them is about gear

The vocabulary exists because people kept comparing numbers that were not the same number. Base weight is the pack with the consumables removed: shelter, sleep system, cook kit, clothes carried rather than worn, and the pack itself. Total pack weight adds food, fuel and water. Skin-out weight adds the boots, the clothes on your body and the poles in your hands, and it is the figure that matters if you are working out what your knees are actually carrying downhill.

Base weight gets the attention because it is the number that stays the same all week and the only one a purchase can change. But it is not the number that hurts on day one. A four-day food carry at 24 ounces a day is six pounds; two litres of water is four and a half; a canister and pot fuel is half a pound. That is eleven pounds of things that will be gone by the end, sitting on top of a gear list that a great deal of money went into reducing by two.

Water is the heaviest thing most people carry

A litre of water weighs 2.2 pounds and there is no lighter water. Nothing else in the pack has that property — every other item has a lighter version at some price. This is why the spacing of reliable water sources decides pack weight far more than the gear list does. A trail with a creek every three miles lets you walk with half a litre; the same trail in September, with the creeks dry and the next reliable source eleven miles on, is a four-litre carry and about seven and a half pounds heavier for identical gear.

The practical consequence is that the research that saves the most weight is not gear research. It is finding out, from recent reports rather than the map, where the water actually is this season.

Some people classify generously to make a base weight look better. The classification only misleads you if you then compare that number against somebody who classified strictly. Within your own kit, over several trips, any consistent rule works — the useful output is which of your own items is fifteen percent of your base weight, and that answer does not move.

What actually gets lighter

The three heaviest packed items are, on almost every list, shelter, sleep system and the pack. They are heavy because they are the three that have to work all night in bad weather, and they are also where the price per ounce saved is steepest. Below them, the middle of a gear list is where the easy weight hides: the second knife, the spare set of clothes that never comes out of the stuff sack, the power bank sized for a phone that never leaves airplane mode, the cook kit that could be one pot.

Sorting your own list by weight, as the calculator does, tends to make the argument on its own. An item that is one percent of base weight is not worth an evening of thought no matter how satisfying it would be to replace. Three items at ten percent each are the whole conversation.

Questions people ask

What counts as base weight in backpacking?

Everything in and on your pack that will still be there at the end of the trip: the pack, shelter, sleeping bag or quilt, pad, cook kit, filter, electronics, first aid, and any clothing you are carrying rather than wearing. It excludes food, fuel and water, which are the consumables, and it excludes what is on your body and in your hands, which is worn weight. The definition exists so that two people can compare gear lists without one of them counting four days of dinners.

Why does my pack weigh so much more than my base weight?

Because the consumables are usually bigger than people expect. Food at 20 to 30 ounces a day for four days is five to seven and a half pounds. Two litres of water is four and a half pounds. Fuel is another half. That is ten to twelve pounds sitting on top of the gear list, and none of it shows up in the number people quote each other. This is also why the same kit feels completely different on a one-night trip and a six-day one.

What percentage of body weight should a backpack be?

That is a question for someone who can assess you, not for a calculator. Various figures circulate, they disagree with each other, and none of them know about your training, your history of injury, the terrain or how the pack fits. The field on this page is there so you can enter whatever figure you and a qualified person have settled on and see the pack expressed against it. The page does the division and nothing else.

Does worn weight really not count?

It counts, it just counts differently. Boots and clothing load your legs and body directly rather than through the shoulder straps and hip belt, and weight on the feet is generally reckoned to cost more effort per pound than weight on the back. Skin-out weight is the figure that captures the whole picture and it is the one worth watching if you are comparing a heavy-boot setup with a trail-runner setup. Base weight simply is not trying to answer that question.

How do I weigh gear accurately without a proper scale?

A kitchen scale handles anything under about ten pounds to within a few grams, which covers most individual items. For the pack loaded, stand on a bathroom scale holding it and subtract your own weight — the error is a pound or so, which does not matter at that magnitude. What does matter is weighing rather than reading the manufacturer figure: stated weights routinely omit stakes, guylines, stuff sacks and the packaging you never remove, and those add up to a surprising fraction of a shelter.
