Sprayable volume is the unit that matters
Coverage figures on a product data sheet are given per sprayable gallon — the mixed, reduced, activated material as it goes in the cup. That is not the same as a gallon of the product in the can, and the difference is the whole reason people run out halfway down a panel.
Take a four to one to one mix: four parts base, one part reducer, one part activator. Six parts total, of which the base is four. A quart of base becomes a quart and a half sprayable. Run it the other way and a quart of sprayable material only consumes two thirds of a quart of base. Buy against the wrong one of those two numbers and you are out by fifty percent in whichever direction hurts.
Working the area out honestly
Panel areas are bigger than they look and doubling happens quietly. A door painted inside and out is two areas. Jambs, the underside of a hood, the inner faces of a trunk lid, and the edges you flip out to spray all add up, and they are the parts that get forgotten in an estimate and then found on the day. Rough orientation for exterior faces only: a car door somewhere near 14 to 18 square feet, a hood 20 to 25, a full compact car in the region of 100 to 130. Those are for estimating material, not for quoting a job.

Each of those has its own coverage number and its own mix ratio, so run the calculator once per layer rather than trying to make one figure cover the job.
Waste, and where it actually goes
The waste allowance here covers material that never reaches the panel by any route: what sits in the bottom of the mixing cup, what stays in the gun and the lines, what goes into the test card, and the mix that was made up and then not needed. Fifteen percent is a middle figure. A small job with several colour changes and a gun cleaned between each wastes proportionally far more than a single large panel done in one session.
Transfer efficiency is a different thing and is easy to double-count. It describes the share of what leaves the gun that lands on the surface rather than becoming overspray or evaporating on the way. It is genuinely low — a substantial fraction of what is sprayed does not end up on the panel — but the coverage figure on a data sheet is already a sprayed figure, measured the same way. Applying transfer efficiency again on top of it inflates the order badly. This calculator shows it for context and does not multiply by it.
Systems this page will not go near
Air conditioning refrigerant is not something to open, vent or top up without the certification and recovery equipment that handling it requires. Airbag and restraint modules store energy and deploy with enough force to kill, and they do it from a disconnected battery. High-voltage hybrid and electric drive systems carry voltages that are lethal on contact and are not made safe by turning the car off. None of those three appear anywhere in the numbers here, and none of them are things to work out from a web page. Emissions equipment is separately regulated and what you may change, remove or substitute is set by rules that differ by jurisdiction and by vehicle — check before, not after.
The part that is not arithmetic
Isocyanate-containing clears and hardeners are respiratory sensitizers. That is a specific and serious hazard: exposure can sensitize a person permanently, after which very small further exposures can trigger a severe reaction. The protection that goes with them is supplied air and a proper spray facility, and nothing on this page will select equipment or tell you a level of protection is adequate. Read the safety data sheet for the exact product, and if a facility with the right ventilation, filtration and air supply is not available, that is information about whether the job should be sprayed here at all.

Questions people ask
What does a 4:1:1 mix ratio actually mean?
Four parts of the base product, one part reducer, one part activator, measured by volume. Six parts total. Mixed in a graduated cup, you fill to the mark for four, then to the mark for the fifth part, then the sixth — the cup markings are laid out for exactly that. The consequence for buying is that the base is only two thirds of what ends up sprayable, so a quart of base makes a quart and a half in the cup. Ratios differ by product and by whether you are spraying base, clear or primer, so read the sheet for the material in your hand.
Why does the same paint cover a different area on two jobs?
Film build, mostly. How much material goes down per coat depends on gun setup, fluid tip, pressure, distance, gun speed and overlap, and two people spraying the same product put down noticeably different thicknesses. Colour matters too — some pigments cover in two coats and some want four. Temperature and humidity change how the material flows and how much evaporates on the way. A coverage figure is a planning number, and the honest thing to do is buy against it with margin and record what the job actually used for next time.
Should I include primer in this calculation?
Calculate it separately. Primer and sealer have their own coverage figures, their own mix ratios and usually a different number of coats, and lumping them in with the topcoat produces a figure that is wrong for both. Run the calculator once with the primer numbers, once with the base numbers and once with the clear numbers, then add up what you need to buy. It also lets you see which layer is actually driving the material cost, which is frequently the clear.
How much extra should I buy?
Enough to finish the job in one batch, because a second batch mixed later is a second chance to get the ratio or the colour slightly different. The waste allowance in this calculator covers the cup and the gun; it does not cover a mistake, a run that gets sanded and resprayed, or a panel that needed an extra coat to cover. If the material is expensive and the job is one you cannot leave half done, adding a margin above the calculated figure is cheaper than stopping.
Can I substitute a different reducer or activator?
That is a product question and the answer comes from the manufacturer, not from a ratio. Reducers are graded for temperature and are chosen to match the conditions you are spraying in; activators are matched to the specific product chemistry. Mixing components across product lines can affect cure, adhesion, gloss and durability, and the failure often shows up weeks later. The mix ratio arithmetic on this page works for whatever combination you tell it. Whether that combination is one the manufacturer supports is a separate question with a separate source.
