The arithmetic
Grams of pure ethanol are volume in millilitres times ABV as a fraction times 0.789, the density of ethanol. A 12 fl oz beer at 5 percent is 355 x 0.05 x 0.789, which is 14.0 grams — the definition of a US standard drink, and not a coincidence, since the standard was set to match a typical beer.
Calories are 7 per gram of ethanol plus whatever carbohydrate survived fermentation. Ethanol is energy-dense, sitting between carbohydrate at 4 and fat at 9. In spirits that is the whole story and a 1.5 fl oz shot of 40 percent vodka is about 97 calories with no carbohydrate at all. In beer, cider and cocktails the residual sugar adds meaningfully: a sweet cider carries roughly 20 g of carbohydrate per bottle, which is 80 calories before any alcohol is counted.
Serving sizes are the main source of error
The standard-drink table assumes 12 fl oz of 5 percent beer, 5 fl oz of 12 percent wine and 1.5 fl oz of 40 percent spirits. Almost nothing in a bar matches those numbers.

Two craft pints and a generous glass of wine is somewhere near six standard drinks, not three. This is the single largest reason people underestimate their own intake, and it is why counting drinks by container is not counting drinks.
Cocktails are unmodellable and the figure here is a placeholder
The sweet cocktail entry uses 8 fl oz at 12 percent with 10 kcal per 100 ml of residual sugar, which lands near 190 calories. A real margarita made with triple sec and sour mix can exceed 400. A mudslide or a piña colada, built on cream and coconut, can pass 600. Anything served frozen is worse than anything served on ice, and anything from a pre-mix bottle is sweeter than a bar version.
If the cocktail matters, calculate the spirits separately as shots and add the mixer from its own label. That is more accurate than any category average could be.
Empty calories does not mean weightless
The phrase means the calories arrive without protein, fibre or micronutrients, not that they are unavailable. They are metabolised, and the body deals with ethanol first because it cannot be stored — which means fat oxidation is suppressed for the duration. Alcohol also reliably disinhibits eating, and the food consumed during and after a drinking session usually exceeds the drinks in calories.
The practical figure worth carrying: four regular beers is around 600 calories, close to a full meal, and it is a meal that does not register as one.
The zero-sugar products, briefly
Hard seltzers and low-carbohydrate beers cut the residual carbohydrate, which is the smaller half. A 5 percent seltzer is about 100 calories against 150 for a regular beer of the same size and strength, and the 100 is almost entirely ethanol. Nothing marketed as zero sugar removes alcohol calories, because they are not sugar. The same applies to spirits with soda: it is a low-calorie drink relative to a cocktail and it contains exactly as much alcohol as the same measure would in anything else.
Questions people ask
How many calories are in a bottle of wine?
A 750 ml bottle at 13 percent contains about 77 g of ethanol, which is 540 calories, plus roughly 20 for residual sugar in a dry wine. Call it 560 to 600 for a dry red or white. Sweet wines go higher — a dessert wine can add 100 calories or more per bottle from sugar alone — and higher-alcohol reds at 15 percent push toward 650. That is also 5.5 US standard drinks, which is over the daily low-risk limit for anyone.
Does alcohol turn into fat?
Not directly, in any meaningful quantity. De novo lipogenesis from ethanol is a minor pathway; most is oxidised to acetate and burned. The effect on body weight comes from displacement — while acetate is being cleared, the fat and carbohydrate eaten at the same meal are oxidised less and stored more. Combined with the disinhibition of appetite and the fact that drinking occasions come with food, the net result is straightforwardly positive energy balance. The mechanism is indirect; the outcome is not.
Is a glass of red wine good for the heart?
The observational studies behind that claim compared drinkers with abstainers, and the abstainer groups in many of them included people who had stopped drinking because they were already unwell — the sick-quitter problem. Analyses that separate lifetime abstainers, and Mendelian randomisation studies that use genetic variants in alcohol metabolism as a proxy for intake, largely erase the protective association. The current position of the WHO and of most cancer agencies is that no consumption level is established as safe, and that any cardiovascular benefit, if it exists at all, is small relative to the cancer risk.
Why are the limits different for men and women?
Body water is the main reason. Women have a lower proportion of total body water on average, so the same quantity of ethanol reaches a higher blood concentration, and there is evidence for lower gastric alcohol dehydrogenase activity as well, meaning less is metabolised before it reaches circulation. The NIAAA limits reflect that. They are population thresholds and take no account of your body size, medication or liver function, all of which shift the picture individually.
Does the calculator account for food eaten while drinking?
No, and the omission is usually larger than everything the calculator does count. Food alongside drinks routinely runs to several hundred calories and often more than the drinks themselves. Food also slows gastric emptying, which lowers peak blood alcohol for the same quantity consumed — a real effect on intoxication, and no effect at all on the calories, which arrive regardless of how fast they are absorbed.
